Making the switch from iPhone to Android will get easier. But there’s a caveat. Image: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
Apple is building a way out of the iOS “walled garden.” It promised on Thursday to make it easier to switch the data from an iPhone to an Android or other handset.
That said, the migration tool is part of Apple complying with the European Union’s Digital Market Act so the solution might not be available outside of the EU.
Apple building tool for iPhone-to-Android switchers
There’s criticism of both Apple and Google for building so-called walled gardens – operating systems crafted in such way that it’s difficult for users to shift between them.
Among the topics covered is a promise to make the switch from iPhone to Android or another operating system easier.
The report says:
“Apple plans to make further changes to its user data portability offering. Third parties offer migration solutions that help users transfer data between devices with different operating systems. To build on those options, Apple is developing a solution that helps mobile operating system providers develop more user-friendly solutions to transfer data from an iPhone to a non-Apple phone. Apple aims to make this solution available by fall 2025.”
More people might use this tool than the critics who talk about Apple or Android walled gardens might suspect. A recent poll found that 13% of U.S. iPhone buyers had an Android as their previous device.
But again, it’s possible U.S. handset buyers won’t have access to Apple’s future data migration tool. It’s being created to comply with the DMA so it might only be available in the EU.
Motorola Moto G Power 5G 2023 for $200: My main problem with Motorola phones is that there’s no NFC (6/10, WIRED Review), which means you can’t use them to pay your ticket fare on the off chance you left your wallet at home. Motorola also only promises one OS upgrade (with three years of security updates). You can get a much better deal with the devices above. However, there is a headphone jack, a microSD card to expand the 256 GB of storage, and a charger in the box.
I tested Samsung’s Galaxy A23 5G and found its performance annoyingly slow, which shouldn’t be the case for a $300 smartphone these days. I also don’t recommend Motorola’s Moto G Play 2023, Moto G Stylus 2023, Moto G Power 2022, and Moto G Pure 2022 because the above phones trounce them in every way and don’t cost much more.
The Nokia G400 5G (6/10, WIRED Review) is a fine phone, but its software policy just isn’t as good as our top recommended devices above and its performance can be stuttery when you juggle multiple apps. The Nokia G100 was OK until the display started locking up and wouldn’t accept touch input. I tried a second unit and ran into the same issue. I have also tested the Doogee S89 Pro, a rugged smartphone. While I didn’t run into any glaring flaws, it’s a pain in the butt to carry around and uncomfortable in the hand, too. Sure, there’s a massive 12,000-mAh battery, but it didn’t last as long as I expected. The company has a spotty record with software updates, too.
Sort of. Any of our top picks are excellent choices, but if you can wait until May or June, we’ll have a broader lineup to choose from. Motorola will likely unveil more of its budget Moto G lineup soon. TCL will release its 50-series this summer, HMD Global might have some budget devices in tow by July, and we will likely see a Pixel 8A at Google I/O in May.
Consider Last Year’s Flagship Phones
If none of these phones have the features you want or they aren’t as powerful as you’d like, your best option is to look for last year’s flagship smartphones, which might be steeply discounted. Sometimes they’re easy to find, but manufacturers may stop selling them altogether. Keep in mind that you’ll lose a year of software support, but that’s often still better than the software support available on cheap phones anyway. The OnePlus 11, for example, has dipped as low as $499. Samsung’s Galaxy S23 has started to creep down toward $600.
5G is the latest cellular network and it’s widespread enough that you should try to stick to phones that support it. It’s not completely replacing 4G LTE, so you’ll see this in your status bar as you roam around the country. You can read more about it here, but in short, 5G comes in two major types: sub-6 and millimeter wave (mmWave). The latter is usually only available in flagship phones and allows you to access superfast speeds, but you’ll rarely encounter mmWave (think select areas in major cities and certain venues, like stadiums and airports). Sub-6 isn’t much faster than 4G LTE, but it has a broader range and is more widely accessible these days. Most of the smartphones we recommend here support sub-6 5G, even ones as low as $200.
Check Network Compatibility
If you buy an unlocked phone on this list and try to take it to one of your wireless carrier’s retail stores, they may tell you it isn’t compatible with the network. It likely is. Just use a paper clip or SIM ejection tool to pop the SIM card out of your current phone, then slide that SIM into your new phone. If it doesn’t work at first, reboot the phone or wait a couple of hours.
If you need a new SIM, try ordering one online from your carrier or see if they’ll give you a SIM when you activate a line in the store (if you’re starting coverage). Tell them you have a phone. Many times, reps will want to sell you a phone; that’s one potential reason they might hassle you into buying a different device in the store. Having said that, please make sure whatever phone you buy will work on your wireless network. Listings on retailers like Amazon should state clearly which networks a device will be compatible with. Also, make sure the listing says the phone is being sold “unlocked.”
Keeping your phone till it dies has got a whole lot more difficult lately, right? Hardware has reached a point in recent years where for once, it’s more likely that you’ll get bored of your phone long before you kill it and phone companies are starting to steer into this, admittedly positive, skid.
That is, unless you are OnePlus. The relatively recent phone launches from Samsung and Google have introduced seven years of Android updates to the flagship norm. But OnePlus isn’t joining the party quite yet. The OnePlus 12 launched with support for only four years of major Android updates but, contrary to belief, this might actually be a good thing.
Sticking to its roots
Since its inception, OnePlus has consistently towed the line of high performance without a high price. While its prices have creeped up over the years, it still produces phones that can nip at the best Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra all without a bank-breaking price. The OnePlus 12 continues this trend, and from what I can tell, it makes it all the more enticing.
OnePlus loyalists will often boast of their phone’s capability to match, or even surpass, the quality of its rivals from Samsung and Google, not to mention iPhone. It’s this near cult-like drive for superiority that arguably makes OnePlus’ call to have a reduced lifespan on the OnePlus 12 one of its best decisions yet.
See, with great lifespans, come great boredoms, to badly rephrase an iconic quote. Although this isn’t something that’s necessarily true for all phone users, it’s definitely true for phone lovers, which OnePlus users usually are. The data also supports this: in a UK survey by YouGov, 62% of people said they only expect to use a phone for up to four years. In the US, data from Statista suggests people are changing their phone on average every two to three years, and these aren’t just the OnePlus lovers, this is everyone.
So why would people need seven years of Android updates? Sure, it will serve those who simply choose not to change their phone until it is broken in a way the OnePlus 12 won’t, but, is that the majority right now? I think not.
Finding opportunities
As ever, there is a small but malleable gap in the smartphone market that OnePlus has cleverly woven its way into. The OnePlus 12 takes the best bits of some of its key rivals such as the Galaxy S24 Ultra and Xiaomi 14 and reworks them to their own model in a way which, arguably, could make you want to spend four years with it, rather than needing to to ensure you get your money’s worth.
The OnePlus 12 features the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 as standard, something which isn’t the case globally for the Samsung Galaxy S24, it has a camera system made in collaboration with Hasselblad to create an improved, yet recognisably OnePlus snapper suite, much like Xiaomi have done with Leica, and it surpasses the both of them in both battery size and charging speeds. That’s before you even consider the advanced cooling tech and battery maintenance engine featured in the OnePlus 12 to help keep it at top performance for longer.
Of course, as you’d expect, the OnePlus 12 does all of this, and still comes in at arguably great value. The basic 12GB RAM 256GB storage model of the OnePlus 12 is £849/$799.99, while the Samsung Galaxy S24 with only 8GB RAM and 128GB storage comes in at £799/$799. So for only £50 more – or absolutely no difference if you’re in the US – you can get more RAM, more storage, and specs that either match or beat the phone which is supposedly the best phone right now. So fundamentally, why wouldn’t you go OnePlus?
Looking forward
Don’t get me wrong, seven years of updates is huge. If you can’t afford a new phone, that amount of Android updates will mean there’s all the more reason to look towards the refurbished phone market. It will add resale value to old devices, which will not only improve your bank balance but it will also give people fewer reasons to simply throw out their old phone, reducing electronic waste.
Okay now the environmental bit is mentioned, from a phones point-of-view there is one clear other side for diehard phone lovers, as fundamentally, seven years is a very long time in the tech world right now.
Right now phone advancements have picked up pace again, partly thanks to advancements in AI, yes, but also simply down to the sheer number of improvements we’re seeing in both the hardware and software devices are using. Seven years will simply leave you a long way behind everyone else, with a phone that could well be on its last legs, and a phone bill that will have seen one – or maybe six – too many yearly price increases. And nobody wants that, especially not true phone-lovers; four years however, might just be the sweet spot.

In today’s fast-paced world, Android smartphones have transcended their role as mere communication devices to become indispensable companions in our daily lives, seamlessly integrating themselves into every aspect of our routine. However, as with all technology, these devices are not immune to the wear and tear of continuous use. Over time, you might notice your once-speedy Android phone beginning to drag its feet, exhibiting symptoms such as lagging response times, unexpected freezing during use, or an overall sluggishness that mars the user experience.
This can be particularly frustrating, especially when you rely on your device for a multitude of tasks, from professional communications to personal entertainment. But there’s no need for despair! The good news is that this decline in performance isn’t necessarily irreversible. With a few straightforward steps, you can breathe new life into your phone, restoring the quick, responsive performance you’ve come to rely on. These measures are not only easy to implement but also highly effective in reclaiming the snappy feel of your device, ensuring that your Android phone continues to serve you well without compromising on speed or efficiency.
1. The Power of a Restart
It sounds simple, but sometimes a quick reboot is all your phone needs. Restarting clears out temporary files and gives your operating system a fresh start, often solving minor performance hiccups.
2. Free Up Some Space
Like a cluttered desk can slow down your work, a cluttered phone can hinder its performance. Aim to keep at least 10-20% of your phone’s internal storage free.
Uninstall Unused Apps: Apps you never use take up space and sometimes have background processes running. Do a sweep and uninstall anything you don’t need.
Delete Old Downloads: Clear out your Downloads folder regularly to get rid of files you don’t need anymore.
Clear Your Cache: Apps store temporary files (cache) to function faster. While useful, this cache can grow. Go to Settings > Apps > [App Name] > Storage > Clear Cache. Do this for apps you use frequently.
Embrace the Cloud: Store photos and videos you want to keep on cloud services like Google Photos or OneDrive to free up device storage.
3. Identify Resource-Hungry Apps
Some apps are notorious for draining battery and processing power. Here’s how to find them:
Settings: Go to Settings > Battery, or Settings > Apps and look for high battery draining apps.
Alternatives: Consider ‘Lite’ versions of apps (like Facebook Lite, Twitter Lite) for a less demanding alternative.
4. Limit Background Activity
Many apps continue running in the background even when you’re not actively using them. Here’s how to take control:
Force Stop: Go to Settings > Apps > [App Name] > Force Stop. This stops the app completely but it may restart later.
Restrict Background Usage: Check under Settings > Apps > [App Name] for options to restrict background activity or data usage.
Developer Options: For more control, enable Developer Options (Settings > About Phone > tap Build Number 7 times) and find settings to manage background processes.
5. Tame Your Home Screen
Live wallpapers and excessive widgets look fancy but can put strain on your device.
Simple is Better: Opt for a static wallpaper on your Android phone.
Widget Watch: Limit the number of widgets on your home screen, especially data-intensive ones like weather or news widgets that frequently update.
6. Keep Things Updated
Apps and Android system updates frequently include performance fixes.
App Updates: Regularly check for app updates in the Google Play store. Enable auto-updates if you prefer.
System Updates: Go to Settings > System > System Updates to check for and install the latest Android system updates.
7. Animations: The Subtle Speed Drain
Eye-catching animations add to the Android experience, but they can also have a minor impact on performance. Here’s how to adjust them:
Developer Options: Follow the steps mentioned earlier to enable Developer Options on your device. Scroll down and find Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, Animator duration scale. Set these to 0.5x or disable them.
Advanced Tip: Factory Reset
If your phone is still painfully slow, a factory reset can be a last resort, giving you a fresh, clean slate. Remember, this will erase all data, so back up your important information first!
Conclusion
Embarking on the journey of implementing these carefully curated tips will significantly elevate the performance of your Android phone, transforming your day-to-day interactions with your device into a seamless and expedited experience. This enhancement in speed and responsiveness is not just about saving time; it’s about enriching your digital life, making every swipe, tap, and scroll a testament to the efficiency that technology can offer.
It’s important to recognize that these improvements are not fleeting; they are the result of adopting a proactive approach towards the regular maintenance of your smartphone. Just as the well-being of a garden reflects the consistency of care it receives, the sustained peak performance of your Android device is a direct consequence of the minor yet regular maintenance efforts you invest. Engaging in such practices ensures that your phone remains a reliable and swift companion, ready to meet the demands of your dynamic lifestyle without compromise. Let this be a reminder that in the realm of technology, as in life, consistent care and attention can yield remarkable results, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.

ROMs Directory: Choose a location for storing your game files. The default “ROMs” directory is also placed in the root of the internal storage. You have the option to relocate this directory to an SD card for additional space. If moved, you’ll need to manually create the “ROMs” directory on the SD card and delete any empty directory created by ES-DE in the internal storage.
Game Systems Directory Structure: Optionally, you can create a directory structure within your ROMs folder for different game systems. This action also generates systeminfo.txt files in each system directory, providing details on supported file extensions and emulators. While not mandatory, this step is recommended for convenience.
Final Steps
Placing Game Files: Ensure you place at least one game file with a supported extension in the ROMs directory. If no supported games are found, ES-DE will display an informational dialog about the absence of games.
Installing Emulators: Note that ES-DE does not come with emulators. You must install these separately. Detailed information on this topic can be found within the application or its documentation.
Re-running the Configurator
If you need to access the configurator again, you can do so by:
Revoking storage access permissions from the Android Apps settings screen under Special app access. This action triggers the configurator upon the next app start.
Clearing the app’s storage under Storage & cache settings. However, this will delete all themes downloaded via the theme downloader and is not generally recommended.
Renaming the ES-DE or ROMs directory, which will also prompt the configurator to run the next time you start ES-DE.
Tips for a Better Experience
Regularly Update: Keep both ES-DE and your emulators up to date to enjoy the latest features and improvements.
Customize Controls: Dive into the settings to customize control layouts for different emulators, ensuring the best gaming experience.
Explore Themes: ES-DE supports themes, allowing you to personalize the appearance of the interface. Explore and download themes that suit your taste.
