Hundreds of thousands of WordPress websites are vulnerable to a critical severity flaw which allows threat actors to upload malware to the site through a bug in a plugin.
As reported by BleepingComputer, Japan’s CERT recently found a critical severity flaw (9.8) in the Forminator plugin, built by WPMU DEV. The flaw, now tracked as CVE-2024-28890, allows threat actors to obtain sensitive information by accessing files on the server.
The researchers also said the flaw could be used to change the contents of the site, mount denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, and more.
No evidence of abuse
Forminator is a plugin that allows WordPress operators to add custom contact, feedback, quizzes, surveys, polls, and payment forms. Everything is drag-and-drop and thus user-friendly, and plays well with many other plugins.
WPMU DEV has addressed the issue and released a patch. Users are advised to apply it and bring their Forminator plugin to version 1.29.3 as soon as possible. At press time, the WordPress.org website shows at least 500,000 active downloads, of which 56% run the latest version. That leaves at least 230,000 websites that are possibly still vulnerable.
So far, there is no evidence of CVE-2024-28890 being exploited in the wild, but given its destructive potential, and the simplicity to be abused, chances are abuse is just a matter of time.
While WordPress itself is generally considered a safe platform, its various plugins and add-ons present a unique opportunity for hackers looking for a way in. As a general rule of thumb, WordPress admins are advised to keep the platform, the plugins, themes, and add-ons updated at all times, and to deactivate all of the add-ons that they don’t actively use.

In 2023, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) implemented new cybersecurity disclosure rules. These regulations mandate the disclosure of “material” threat and breach incidents within four days of occurrence, along with annual reporting on cybersecurity risk management, strategy, and governance.
The introduction of the new SEC cybersecurity requirements represents a critical milestone in the continuous fight against cyber threats. In 2023, chief information security officers (CISOs) revealed that three out of four companies in the United States were vulnerable to a material cyberattack. Consequently, cybercrime remains one of the foremost risks confronting US-based companies. Additionally, in the same year, nearly seven out of ten organizations in the United States experienced a ransomware attack within the preceding twelve months.
Cyberattacks pose significant risks to businesses, primarily in terms of financial damage. In 2024, cybercrime is projected to cost the United States alone more than $452 billion. Additionally, the loss of sensitive data is a consequential outcome of cyberattacks. In 2023, the United States ranked third globally in the percentage of companies reporting the loss of sensitive information.
Furthermore, data compromise incidents affected approximately 422 million individuals in the country in 2022, totaling 1,802 incidents. The US is recognized among the countries with high data breach density. Beyond financial and data loss implications, businesses are also wary of reputational damage, significant downtimes, and the potential loss of current customers, all of which can affect a company’s valuation and overall standing.

Rise of awareness
Having in mind growing risks and new SEC rules, companies are strengthening their defenses, shows a recent report by Infatica, a provider in the proxy service market. According to the company’s data, the demand for proxy services searches has jumped by 106,5% over the last year. The reason behind this trend is proxies’ ability to imitate cybersecurity attacks. Therefore, using this technology companies can test their defenses.
The growing interest in proxy servers is not limited to seeking enhanced security measures alone. Searches for “free web proxy server” have risen by 5,042.9%, indicating a widespread pursuit for accessible solutions that offer anonymity. Meanwhile, the demand for “proxy server list” and “anonymous proxy server” has also seen significant upticks of 80.6% and 414.3%, respectively, highlighting the importance of reliable and discreet online operations.
While the SEC’s cybersecurity rules primarily target publicly listed companies, many of these firms depend on smaller third-party software and supply chain providers. A cyberattack at any juncture within this chain could result in significant consequences. This is why non-public entities are compelled to bolster their defenses too.

Major gap
As businesses ramp up their activities, significant gaps remain evident. A staggering 81% of security leaders acknowledge the impact of the new rules on their businesses. However, only 54% convey confidence in their organization’s ability to comply effectively. Surprisingly, merely 2% of security leaders have initiated the process of adhering to the new rules. Approximately 33% are still in the early stages, while a striking 68% feel overwhelmed by the new disclosure requirements.
Among the myriad challenges, determining the materiality of cybersecurity incidents stands out, with 49% of respondents highlighting its complexity. Additionally, 47% struggle with enhancing their disclosure processes, further complicating compliance efforts.
Here are several advices on how to prepare for complying with SEC cybersecurity rules:
1. Consolidate your cybersecurity risk data
With the new regulations mandating the disclosure of incidents upon discovery and comprehensive reports on cybersecurity strategy quarterly and annually, organizations must prioritize centralizing cybersecurity risk assessment and incident data. Consolidating this data into a single repository, rather than scattered across spreadsheet software or lost in email inboxes, increases the likelihood of meeting SEC deadlines and reduces the time spent gathering information from different departments and stakeholders for incident disclosure.
2. Acquire cyber risk quantification capabilities
Traditionally, organizations have used qualitative methods such as ordinal lists or red-yellow-and-green severity charts to assess the significance of cybersecurity incidents or other risk events. While the SEC recommends considering these assessments for incident materiality determination, quantifying cyber risk offers a more accurate insight into the financial impact of an incident. Understanding the quantified financial impact of cyber risks enables organizations to take necessary steps to mitigate costly risks or, ideally, prevent them altogether. This approach reduces the overall volume of disclosures required.
3. Optimize your incident management processes
It’s an opportune moment to conduct a comprehensive review of your organization’s incident management processes to ensure they are proficient in identifying, addressing, and reporting cybersecurity incidents. Streamlining and refining these processes facilitate the interception of cyber risks before they escalate into significant issues and enable swift reporting when necessary.
4. Enhance your cybersecurity and cyber risk governance
Ensuring compliance with the SEC’s new regulations involves adequately informing your board of directors about your organization’s cybersecurity risk management practices. Implementing robust reporting and communication processes is essential to regularly update leadership on cyber risk management efforts and any incidents experienced by the company. Furthermore, it’s crucial to articulate how these incidents may impact or are already affecting the organization’s strategy and finances.
5. Secure your third-party relationships
The updated regulations emphasize the importance of assessing cyber risk beyond the confines of your organization. Meeting the requirements for reporting on third-party cyber risk assessment and secure vendor selection underscores the necessity of establishing an effective third-party risk management program. Indeed, supply chain attacks aimed at smaller contractors and vendors frequently rank among the primary causes of cybersecurity incidents at larger organizations.
6. Improve a cyber risk culture within your teams
Digital transformation has significantly impacted nearly every organization, particularly in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic, which accelerated the shift of work and life online. Consequently, there has been a surge in employees connecting to organizational networks from various locations and devices, significantly expanding our cybersecurity attack surfaces. This shift underscores the critical importance of fostering a culture of cybersecurity risk awareness where cybersecurity is seen as everyone’s responsibility, not just the purview of the information security team. The more awareness of the threat posed by cyber risks that an organization can instill in its members, the stronger its overall cybersecurity posture will be, reducing the time needed to disclose incidents to the SEC.
While SEC regulations pose challenges, they also present opportunities. Following rules, can decrease the cybersecurity of the companies, enhance investor confidence, attract capital investment, and contribute to long-term business sustainability.

In other anecdotes, onlookers have reported birds that stop singing, crickets that stopped chirping, or bees that return to their hive, reduce their foraging, or suspend their flight during total darkness. But there are also studies that deny that some of these behaviors occur or can be attributed to the eclipse.
Therefore, NASA scientists plan not only to systematize observations but also to document what people hear and see under the shadow of the moon.
“The Great North American Eclipse”
NASA has created the Eclipse Soundscapes citizen science project to collect the experiences of volunteers. It was inspired by a study conducted nearly 100 years ago by William M. Wheeler and a team of collaborators. At that time, the Boston Natural History Society invited citizens, park rangers, and naturalists to report on the activities of birds, mammals, insects, reptiles, and fish during the summer eclipse of 1932. They collected nearly 500 reports. In their final report they note that some animals exhibited nocturnal behaviors such as returning to their nests and hives or making nighttime vocalizations.
The current NASA study will add observations made during the annular solar eclipse of October 14, 2023 and the total solar eclipse of April 8. The latter will be visible first in Mexico in Mazatlan, then in Nazas, Torreon, Monclova, and Piedras Negras. These localities will be located directly in the umbra of the eclipse and, therefore, their inhabitants will perceive it as total. In nearby regions it will be experienced as a partial eclipse, with less darkness. It will then enter the United States through Texas, passing through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Finally, it will travel across Canada from southern Ontario and continue through Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton. Astronomical estimates point to the Mexican port of Mazatlan as the best place to observe the 2024 event, which will experience totality at about 11:07 am local time.

How You Can Help
In the United States, 30 million people live in the area where the eclipse will be perceived as total. If you add in the Mexican and Canadian public, the potential for collecting experiences is immense. That’s what NASA wants to take advantage of.
The project foresees several levels of volunteering: apprentice, observer, data collector, data analyst, and facilitator.
It was in just the second article of more than 1,000 that Otto Kalliokoski was screening that he spotted what he calls a “Photoshop masterpiece”.
The paper showed images from western blots — a technique used to analyse protein composition — for two samples. But Kalliokoski, an animal behaviourist at the University of Copenhagen, found that the images were identical down to the pixel, which he says is clearly not supposed to happen.
Image manipulation in scientific studies is a known and widespread problem. All the same, Kalliokoski and his colleagues were startled to come across more than 100 studies with questionable images while compiling a systematic review about a widely used test of laboratory rats’ moods. After publishing the review1 in January, the researchers released a preprint2 documenting the troubling studies that they uncovered and how these affected the results of their review. The preprint, posted on bioRxiv in February, has not yet been peer reviewed.
Their work “clearly highlights [that falsified images] are impacting our consolidated knowledge base”, says Alexandra Bannach-Brown, a systematic-review methodologist at the Berlin Institute of Health who was not involved with either the review or the preprint. Systematic reviews, which summarize and interpret the literature on a particular topic, are a key component of that base. With an explosion of scientific literature, “it’s impossible for a single person to keep up with reading every new paper that comes out in their field”, Bannach-Brown says. And that means that upholding the quality of systematic reviews is ever more important.
Pile-up of problems
Kalliokoski’s systematic review examined the reliability of a test designed to assess reward-seeking in rats under stress. A reduced interest in a reward is assumed to be a proxy symptom of depression, and the test is widely used during the development of antidepressant drugs. The team identified an initial pool of 1,035 eligible papers; 588 contained images.
By the time he’d skimmed five papers, Kalliokoski had already found a second one with troubling images. Not sure what to do, he bookmarked the suspicious studies and went ahead with collating papers for the review. As the questionable papers kept piling up, he and his colleagues decided to deploy Imagetwin, an AI-based software tool that flags problems such as duplicated images and ones that have been stretched or rotated. Either Imagetwin or the authors’ visual scrutiny flagged 112 — almost 20% — of the 588 image-containing papers.
“That is actually a lot,” says Elizabeth Bik, a microbiologist in San Francisco, California, who has investigated image-related misconduct and is now an independent scientific-integrity consultant. Whether image manipulation is the result of honest error or an intention to mislead, “it could undermine the findings of a study”, she says.
Small but detectable effect
For their final analysis, the authors examined all the papers that met their criteria for inclusion in their review. This batch, consisting of 132 studies, included 10 of the 112 that the team had flagged as having potentially doctored images.
Journals adopt AI to spot duplicated images in manuscripts
Analysis of these 10 studies alone assessed the test as 50% more effective at identifying depression-related symptoms than did a calculation based on the 122 studies without questionable images. These suspicious studies “do actually skew the results”, Kalliokoski says — although “not massively”, because overall variations in the data set mask the contribution from this small subset.
Examples from this study “cover pretty much all types of image problems”, Bik says, ranging from simple duplication to images that showed evidence of deliberate alteration. Using a scale that Bik developed to categorize the degree of image manipulation, the researchers found that most of the problematic images showed signs of tampering.
The researchers published their review in January in Translational Psychiatry without telling the journal that it was based in part on papers that included suspicious images. The journal’s publisher, Springer Nature, told Nature that it is investigating. (The Nature news team is editorially independent of its publisher, Springer Nature).
When they published their preprint the following month, the researchers included details of all the papers with suspicious images. They also flagged each study on Pubpeer, a website where scientists comment anonymously on papers. “My first allegiance is towards the [scientific] community,” Kalliokoski says, adding that putting the data out is the first step.
Bring reviews to life
The process of challenging a study’s integrity, giving its authors a chance to respond and seeking retraction for fraudulent studies can take years. One way to clear these muddied waters, says Bannach-Brown, is to publish ‘living’ systematic reviews, which are designed to be updated whenever papers get retracted or new research is added. She has helped to develop one such method of creating living reviews, called Systematic Online Living Evidence Summaries.
Systematic-review writers are also keen to see publishers integrate standardized ways to screen out dubious studies — rather than waiting until a study gets retracted.
Authors, publishers and editorial boards need to work together, Bannach-Brown says, to “catch some of these questionable research practices before they even make it to publication.”
Apple’s M3 Ultra chip may be designed as its own, standalone chip, rather than be made up of two M3 Max dies, according to a plausible new theory.
The theory comes from Max Tech‘s Vadim Yuryev, who outlined his thinking in a post on X earlier today. Citing a post from @techanalye1 which suggests the M3 Max chip no longer features the UltraFusion interconnect, Yuryev postulated that the as-yet-unreleased “M3 Ultra” chip will not be able to comprise two Max chips in a single package. This means that the M3 Ultra is likely to be a standalone chip for the first time.
This would enable Apple to make specific customizations to the M3 Ultra to make it more suitable for intense workflows. For example, the company could omit efficiency cores entirely in favor of an all-performance core design, as well as add even more GPU cores. At minimum, a single M3 Ultra chip designed in this way would be almost certain to offer better performance scaling than the M2 Ultra did compared to the M2 Max, since there would no longer be efficiency losses over the UltraFusion interconnect.
Furthermore, Yuryev speculated that the M3 Ultra could feature its own UltraFusion interconnect, allowing two M3 Ultra dies to be combined in a single package for double the performance in a hypothetical “M3 Extreme” chip. This would enable superior performance scaling compared to packaging four M3 Max dies and open the possibility of even higher amounts of unified memory.
Little is currently known about the M3 Ultra chip, but a report in January suggested that it will be fabricated using TSMC’s N3E node, just like the A18 chip that is expected to debut in the iPhone 16 lineup later in the year. This means it would be Apple’s first N3E chip. The M3 Ultra is rumored to launch in a refreshed Mac Studio model in mid-2024.

Climate change is starting to alter how humans keep time.
An analysis1 published in Nature on 27 March has predicted that melting ice caps are slowing Earth’s rotation to such an extent that the next leap second — the mechanism used since 1972 to reconcile official time from atomic clocks with that based on Earth’s unstable speed of rotation — will be delayed by three years.
“Enough ice has melted to move sea level enough that we can actually see the rate of theEarth’s rotation has been affected,” says Duncan Agnew, a geophysicist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California, and author of the study.
The leap second’s time is up: world votes to stop pausing clocks
According to his analysis, global warming will push back the need for another leap second from 2026 to 2029. Leap seconds cause so much havoc for computing that scientists have voted to get rid of them, but not until 2035. Researchers are especially dreading the next leap second, because, for the first time, it is likely to be a negative, skipped second, rather than an extra one added in.
“We do not know how to cope with one second missing. This is why time metrologists are worried,” says Felicitas Arias, former director of the Time Department at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Sèvres, France.
In metrology terms, the three-year delay “is good news”, she says, because even if a negative leap second is still needed, it will happen later, and the world might see fewer of them before 2035 than would otherwise have been anticipated.
But this should not be seen as a point in favour of global warming, Agnew says. “It’s completely outweighed by all the negative aspects.”
Synchronizing clocks
For millennia, people measured time using Earth’s rotation, and the second became defined as a fraction of the time it takes for the planet to turn once on its axis. But since 1967, atomic clocks — which tick using the frequency of light emitted by atoms — have served as more precise timekeepers. Today, a suite of around 450 atomic clocks defines official time on Earth, known as Coordinated Universal Time (utc), and leap seconds are used every few years to keep utc in line with the planet’s natural day.
Atomic clocks are better timekeepers than Earth, because they are stable over millions of years, whereas the planet’s rotation rate varies. In his analysis, Agnew used mathematical models to tease apart the contributions of known geophysical phenomena to Earth’s rotation and to predict their effects on future leap seconds.
Many metrologists anticipated that leap seconds would only ever be added, because on the scale of millions of years, Earth’s spin is slowing down, meaning that, occasionally, a minute in utc needs to be 61 seconds long, to allow Earth to catch up. This reduction in the planet’s rotation rate is caused by the Moon’s pull on the oceans, which creates friction. It also explains, for example, why eclipses 2,000 years ago were recorded at different times in the day from what we would expect on the basis of today’s rotation rate, and why analyses of ancient sediments suggest that 1.4 billion years ago a day was only around 19 hours long.
Arctic 2.0: What happens after all the ice goes?
But on shorter timescales, geophysical phenomena make the rotation rate fluctuate, says Agnew. Right now, the rate at which Earth spins is being affected by currents in the liquid core of the planet, which since the 1970s have caused the rotation speed of the outer crust to increase. This has meant that added leap seconds are needed less frequently, and if the trend continues, a leap second will need to be removed from utc.
Agnew’s analysis finds that this could happen later than was previously thought, because of climate change. Data from satellites mapping Earth’s gravity show that since the early 1990s the planet has become less spherical and more flattened, as ice from Greenland and Antarctica has melted and moved mass away from the poles towards the Equator. Just as a spinning ice skater slows down by extending their arms away from their body (and speeds up by pulling them in), this flow of water away from Earth’s axis of rotation slows the planet’s spin.
The net result of core currents and of climate change is still an accelerating Earth. But Agnew found that without the effect of melting ice, a negative leap second would be needed three years earlier than is now predicted. “Human activities have a profound impact on climate change. The postponing of a leap second is just one more example,” says Jianli Chen, a geophysicist at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Precision problems
A delayed leap second would be welcomed by metrologists. Leap seconds are a “big problem” already, because in a society that is increasingly based on precise timing, they lead to major failures in computing systems, says Elizabeth Donley, who heads the time and frequency division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder, Colorado.
An unprecedented negative leap second could be even worse. “There’s no accounting for it in all the existing computer codes,” she says.
Agnew’s paper is useful in making predictions, but Donley says that there is still high uncertainty about when a negative leap second will be needed. The calculations rely on Earth’s acceleration continuing at its present rate, but activity in the inner core is almost impossible to predict, cautions Christian Bizouard, an astrogeophysicist at the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service in Paris, which is responsible for deciding when to introduce a leap second. “We do not know when that mean acceleration will stop and reverse itself,” he says.
Agnew hopes that seeing the influence of climate change on timekeeping will jolt some people into action. “I’ve been around climate change for a long time, and I can worry about it plenty well without this, but it’s yet another way of impressing upon people just how big a deal this is,” he says.
