Apple reportedly ordered 8.5 million OLED screens for the iPad Pro models it’s expected to launch soon. More of these panels are for the 13-inch version of the tablet than they are for the 11-inch one.

Leaks indicate the next generation iPad Pro will reach store shelves later this month. Possibly even next week.

Top-of-the line 2024 OLED iPad Pro could be more popular

The last time Apple upgraded its premium tablets for professionals was fall 2022, so a replacement is due. And rather that simply boosting the performance with a faster processor — which Apple is supposedly doing — the 2024 iPad Pro will also get a better type of display.

It will be the first in the product line with an OLED screen rather than the tablet’s traditional LCD. With OLED (short for organic light-emitting diode) displays, each pixel glows on its own. This leads to a bright, even image with strong contrast.

On Friday, DigiTimes reported that Apple ordered 8.5 million OLED panels from South Korean companies. Of these, 4.5 million will be for the 13-inch version of the tablet while the remaining 4 million will be for the 11-inch version.

If true, it indicates that Cupertino expects the larger, more expensive version of the OLED iPad Pro to be the more popular of the two models.

Other enhancements

Previous leaks indicate that potential buyers should expect Apple’s next top-tier tablets to run the new M3 processor. This is the same chip that just went into the 2024 MacBook Air, the latest consumer-oriented macOS notebook.

OLED screen panels don’t need backlights so they’re thinner than traditional LEDs. This will allegedly allowed the designers of the 2024 iPad Pro to make the upcoming tablet significantly slimmer.

The panels also cost more, but a leak indicates that the price jump will be less than half of what had been previously rumored.

Redditor bucketofmonkeys (“Monk”) showcased the setup in a post entitled, “New Mac Studio M2 Max setup.” On Monday we covered his refurbished M2 Max Mac Studio and Studio Display. On Wednesday we zeroed in on his Keychron K8 tenkeyless mechanical keyboard. Today is all about his Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 USB audio interface. That’s an older model, but Scarlett makes a bunch of high-quality audio interfaces, some of which are featured in Cult of Mac’s upcoming feature about the best audio interfaces for Mac. “I’ve had it for about a decade now. I used to make [YouTube] videos and used it to record my voiceovers,” Monk said when we asked about the Scarlett. “Now I mainly use it as a headphone amp for when I want to use my nice headphones (Sennheiser HD 598). It’s been pretty reliable, although the headphone jack is starting to get a little flaky over the years.”

A connector and converter for sound

An audio interface connects audio equipment to your Mac. And it converts analog audio signals from various sources, like microphones and musical instruments, into digital signals. That way, you can alter and record the sound using Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software installed on your computer. The interface often handles digital-to-analog conversion (DAC), too, allowing you to listen through headphones or studio monitors, aka speakers. Mac OS 8 ends Mac clone era: Today in Apple history

March 8: Today in Apple history: Apple outwits clone-makers with Mac OS 8 March 8, 1997: Apple renames the forthcoming Mac OS 7.7 update, calling it “Mac OS 8.” It’s more than just a name change, though: It’s a sneaky sucker punch that ultimately knocks out Mac clones.

Unfortunately for Mac users, the updated operating system does not deliver the total top-to-bottom rewrite promised by Apple’s Project Copland. However, the renaming strategy turns out to be a brilliant (if underhanded) way of getting Apple out of terrible licensing deals.

Mac OS 8 and the attack of the Mac clones

Early 1997 wasn’t a good time to be an Apple watcher. Despite the return of co-founder Steve Jobs, Apple continued losing money hand over fist, suffering through some of its worst financial quarters ever.

One big challenge Apple faced at the time was the existence of clone Macs, which the company originally viewed as a way to save itself from Microsoft’s Windows 95 juggernaut. Starting in December 1994, Apple signed a number of licensing deals with companies like Power Computing and Radius to produce Macintosh-compatible computers.

The goal? Make Mac competitive with Microsoft.

As Apple’s market share fell, long-time rival Microsoft steamed ahead, thanks to its software-licensing strategy. Cupertino execs envisioned clone Macs as a good way to secure Apple’s future.

Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work like that.

Mac OS 8 ends a bad deal for Apple

Apple CFO Fred Anderson worked out that the clone Macs strategy actually cost the company money. The $50 fee Apple received for every clone Mac sold proved far too low. The company failed to even recoup the money lost when a person chose a clone over an actual Mac.

Cupertino could not get out of the disastrous agreement if it kept updating System 7, the Mac OS licensed to clone-makers. However, if Apple released Mac OS 8, it could argue that the deal became null and void.

Apple made the switch, calling the new operating system Mac OS 8. Then Cupertino began negotiating new, more favorable terms with third parties licensing the Mac operating system.

Mac clone-makers fight back

This inevitably led to consternation from Apple’s licensees. On August 5, 1997, Apple became locked in a standoff with Power Computing after the official launch of Mac OS 8. (You can read more about the feature set of Mac OS 8 here.)

Apple eventually agreed to acquire Power Computing’s customer list and Mac OS license for $10 million and an additional $100 million in AAPL stock. That covered all of Power Computing’s outstanding debts and costs. The clone-maker closed shop for good in early 1998.

Putting an end to Mac clones was one of the first major moves Jobs made as Apple’s new CEO after his 1997 return, along with shutting down the Newton MessagePad division.

System 8 proved a hit in the marketplace, even though it fell short of expectations. Mac fans had to wait for OS X to see a major update, but System 8 marked the start of Apple’s turnaround.

Cool concept video shows possible iOS 18 generative AI features

New generative AI features are expected to be a highlight of iOS 18, and a skilled artist created a concept video that presents an early look at how they might work.

The video also shows other suggested upgrades, like bringing Split View — Apple’s multitasking feature that lets two apps appear side by side on iPad (and Mac) — to the iPhone.

We don’t need to depend on leaks or rumors to learn that Apple has big plans for artificial intelligence — the head of the company flat-out said so. “I think there’s a huge opportunity for Apple with GenAI and AI,” CEO Tim Cook said in February. “We’re excited to share the details of our ongoing work in that space later this year.”

On the assumption that the iPhone will be the main beneficiary of these new capabilities, Kevin Kall, aka the Hacker 34, dreamed up multiple ways to integrate AI into the operating system. Then Kall created an iOS 18 concept video to show them off.

“Engage with Siri like never before. Now integrated into every app, Siri becomes your on-demand assistant for generating text and images, making your interactions seamless and more intuitive,” says Kall’s description of his creation. “Introducing a novel way to edit your photos — using just your voice. Command your iPhone to adjust, filter, or crop your photos, offering a hands-free approach to perfecting your images.”

Over the years, the artist built a collection of concepts depicting future Apple devices. These always stay grounded in what’s really possible and don’t include tech that won’t be available for a decade or more.

Other possible new iPhone features

Generative AI features aren’t the only suggestions in Kall’s iOS 18 concept video. Others include carrying Split View over from iPadOS to iPhone. This would allow two applications to appear side by side, an arrangement that seems practical on a huge display like in the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone 16 lineup reportedly will bring even larger screens, among other improvements.

(Incidentally, iOS concept creators have been toying with the idea of adding Split View to the iPhone for years. We’ve seen concepts pitching the feature in iOS 13, iOS 14, iOS 15 and iOS 17.)

Kall’s other suggestions include making the iPhone Control Center more editable and adding custom lock screen buttons.

We’ll discover whether any of the features from the concept video make it into iOS 18 when Apple unveils it — almost certainly at WWDC24 in June.

Apple relents, reinstates Epic Games developer account

Epic Games can release Fortnite in the EU and open an App Store rival after Apple restored the company’s developer account. This came as the European Commission was starting an inquiry into why the account had been cancelled.

Epic Games will be able to release Fortnite in EU after all

Apple and Epic Games have been embroiled in legal fights for years. In a dispute over Apple’s requirement that it receive a share of the game developer’s revenue from iPhone users, Fortnite and other titles were kicked out of the App Store and all Epic’s developer accounts were suspended in 2020.

Then the EU passed the Digital Markets Act to, among other things, allow increased competition with Apple’s iPhone App Store. Under the aegis of the new legislation, Epic Games Sweden got an Apple developer account earlier this year and announced a plan to open an Epic Games Store in Europe.

But Apple quickly terminated the account after accusing Epic CEO Tim Sweeney of “public attacks on Apple’s policies,” and called his company “verifiably untrustworthy.”

But Sweeney took to X (formerly Twitter) on Friday to announce:

“Following a swift inquiry by the European Commission, Apple notified the Commission and Epic that it would relent and restore our access to bring back Fortnite and launch Epic Games Store in Europe under the DMA law.”

Ina statement given to Bloomberg, Apple said:

“Following conversations with Epic, they have committed to follow the rules, including our DMA policies. As a result, Epic Sweden AB has been permitted to re-sign the developer agreement and accepted into the Apple Developer Program.”

Epic Games declared victory in its own statement:

“This sends a strong signal to developers that the European Commission will act swiftly to enforce the Digital Markets Act and hold gatekeepers accountable. We are moving forward as planned to launch the Epic Games Store and bring Fortnite back to iOS in Europe.”

When the popular game will be available for European iPhone users is unknown. It’ll require the opening of the aforementioned Epic Games Store but the company hasn’t given a timetable for this either.

To be clear, this is relevant only to residents of the European Union. Everyone else must get their iPhone software from the App Store and Epic remains banned from there.
