Ford Motor said third-quarter operating income will be below consensus due to parts shortages and inflation.
However, Wall Street doesn't seem to care about Ford (brand: F) or its peers. There are some positives to be drawn from Ford's surprise report.
In a statement Monday, Ford said it would not complete production of 40,000 to 45,000 high-margin trucks and SUVs before the end of the third quarter. This car will be ready by the end of the year.
Ford said the production shortfall, combined with $1 billion in higher-than-expected costs, will hit quarterly operating income by between $1.4 billion and $1.7 billion. Before the update, analysts had expected around $2.9 billion in operating income. Based on the median estimate of Ford's new management, the company's operating profit is about $1.4 billion.
In fact, the size of the losses was not that great. RBC analyst Joseph Spak downplayed this, saying the unwritten tools cost the company about $600 million in operating profit, or about $14,000 each. (For the entire Ford lineup, including low-margin vehicles, operating income per unit for vehicles sold in the first half of 2022 is approximately $3,000.)
That $600 million plus $1 billion in higher costs adds up to $1.6 trillion, more than the Wall Street consensus estimate of $1.4 trillion in losses. The bottom line is that Ford beat expectations in the third quarter by about $200 million under normal operating conditions.
This is only a theoretical possibility. However, despite the disappointing third-quarter news, Ford stood by its previous estimate of $11.5 billion to $12.5 billion in annual operating profit. Given the results of the first three quarters of the year, Ford needs to earn about $4.5 billion to reach this figure in the fourth quarter.
This would be a great result. Spak is valued at around $3.1 billion, while the Wall Street consensus suggests an operating profit of $3.2 billion.
Spak estimates that adding $600 million in operating profit from Ford's unfinished vehicle losses to its fourth-quarter revenue guidance would bring its forecast to around $3.7 billion, raising the consensus estimate to $3.8 billion. Ford hopes to achieve much more than that, with a strong end to the year.
Citi analyst Itai Michaeli said if Ford sticks to its full-year operating profit forecast in a higher cost environment, Ford should have a much better product range and better prices than expected. The company's ability to retain its drivers also shows the automaker is not facing a demand problem, he said.
Michael isn't sure other automakers are in the same position as Ford when it comes to costs and parts shortages. But Spak wasn't too worried. "We will not be too quick to predict problems for Ford [other automakers]," the analysts wrote in a report released Monday. "Obviously supply remains volatile, but different issues hit automakers at different times."
Both analysts were upbeat on the Ford news, but not on the stock. Spak rates Ford's stock as a Hold with a $15 price target. Michaeli also assigns a hold rating to the stock with a target of $16.
Ford's update surprised no one along the way. No one is upgrading or downgrading their stock or changing their target price.
Overall, 40% of analysts recommend buying Ford stock. This is below average. The average purchase ratio for S&P 500 stocks is around 58%. The average analyst price target is nearly $17 a share.
Ford shares rose 12.3% on Tuesday to $13.09. The S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average were down 1.1% and 1%, respectively. General Motors (GM) shares fell 5.6%. Shares of Tesla (TSLA) fell 0.1%.
Toshiba researchers have achieved a breakthrough in quantum computing architecture by developing a basic dual transmon connector design that will improve the speed and accuracy of quantum computers compared to custom connectors. The coupler is a key element that determines the performance of superconducting quantum computers.
Tunable connectors in a superconducting quantum computer connect two quantum bits and perform quantum calculations by turning the connection between them on and off. Current technology can disable narrow frequency transmon qubit coupling, but this is subject to crosstalk errors that occur in one of the qubits when the other qubit is irradiated with electromagnetic waves for control. In addition, current technologies cannot completely disable the coupling of qubits with significantly different frequencies, which leads to errors due to residual coupling.
Recently, Toshiba has developed a dual transmon coupler that can completely turn on and off communication between qubits with completely different frequencies. Full-on enables high-speed, tightly coupled quantum computing, while full-off eliminates residual coupling, improving the speed and accuracy of quantum computing. Simulations using the new technology have shown that it performs two-qubit gates, the core operations of quantum computing, with 99.99% accuracy and a processing time of just 24 ns.
Toshiba's dual coupler can be applied to fixed-frequency transmon qubits to ensure high stability and ease of design. It is the first device to achieve communication between fixed-frequency transmon qubits with completely different frequencies that can be completely turned on and off, and offers an accurate high-speed two-qubit gate.
This technology is expected to spur the creation of more powerful quantum computers that will help in areas such as achieving carbon neutrality and developing new drugs. Details of the technology are published in the journal Physical Review Applied.

Tunable couplers meet conflicting requirements: a fast, tightly coupled two-qubit gate, and the ability to reduce residual coupling errors by disabling coupling. Toshiba researchers have developed a dual transmon coupler, the world's first tunable coupler capable of completely disconnecting both links and driving both high-speed qubit gates for two fixed-frequency transmon qubits at completely different frequencies.

Simulations have shown that triggering is possible with 99.99% accuracy with a trigger time of just 24 ns. Therefore, the coupler should contribute to the creation of more efficient quantum computers.

LOS ANGELES, September 17 (UPI) – Ana de Armas's performance as Marilyn Monroe was heartwarming. But Blonde, now in some cinemas, shuns traditional biographies by making them uninformed or emotional.
As a child, Gladys (Julian Nicholson), the mother of Norma Jeans (Lily Fisher), told her that Clark Gable was her father. Gladys was cruel and suicidal, so she was hospitalized while Norma Jeane was sent to an orphanage.
As an adult, calling herself Marilyn Monroe (de Armas), she manages her career in Hollywood and her relationships with famous men. Although chronological, the impressionistic account is more like a dream from Monroe's life than a good or bad account.
Monroe's life was undoubtedly tragic when she died at the age of 36. However, Blonde processed most of the Monroe tragedy in a way she could still use to grab attention and win an Oscar.
Blonde is NC-17 rated and feels like a spirited teenager who thinks he's "grown up" because the film's approach to sex makes him super nervous. So the image is reversed during the sex scenes, but the film still focuses on Monroe's Cass Chaplin (Xavier Samuel) and Eddy G. Robinson, Jr. (Evan Williams) and oral sex with John F. Kennedy (Casper Phillipson ). .
A very graphic, albeit artistic, abortion scene likely pushed the film into R-rated territory.In JFK's scene, the long shot of de Armas's face, while obscure, is actually quite striking.
Some of writer / director Andrew Dominik's artistic achievements provide thematic resonance at the close of the nearly three-hour film. Norma Jeane's childhood footprints are repeated three times, revealing early wounds that may never heal.
Monroe calls all her husbands fathers because she misses seeing her real father.
When the photographer captures a private and isolated scene, the surreality of the moment presents itself, even when the physical photographer appears out of nowhere. When fans' mouths scream menacingly, it makes sense as a subjective representation of the overwhelming pressures of fame.
Other non-linear ideas seem random. Movies alternate in color and black and white with no square or widescreen aspect ratio or smoothness.
At first, it appears that the black and white represents Monroe's real life, while the colors represent her Hollywood imagination. But no, some scenes from the film are also presented in black and white.
First Blonde saw de Armas reenact scenes from the famous Monroe movie on screen in an empty, full room for the first time when Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was shown. But then we see him on the set of the next movie. Other scenes from the film are shown in full screen, then the theatrical motifs return.
A very simplistic interpretation is that the black and white scene depicts sadness and, of course, mimics Calvin Klein commercials with absurd and meaningless dialogue. But Monroe's happy moments are also shown in black and white.
Maybe the whole thing didn't make sense because Norma Jeane had it too, but sadly she didn't have to tell the story. This is first described in Joyce Carol Oate's book and later explained again by Dominic.
Blonde's level of conclusion goes beyond dramatic license. It may be irresponsible to present historical characters in this way, even if they clearly call it fiction.
The most interesting part of Blonde is Monroe's focus on Hollywood struggles. Argues gentlemen's salary versus Jane Russell's salary.
After the audition, male producers criticized her performance. But the actors of this scene convey their critique with such art that it is like commenting on the hypocrisy of men's judgments on female talent.
Also included are Monroe's weddings to Joe DiMaggio (Bobby Cannavale) and Arthur Miller (Adrien Brody). Her addiction is happily overcome by the end of the film, even though the abuse she endured in her marriage was inevitable.
The fact that the film itself is so narratively challenging makes de Armas's consistency in his performances all the more remarkable. Capture Monroe's subtle voice without making a caricature and sympathize with the tragedy behind her charming personality.
The world doesn't need another biopic on the same themes as Marilyn or Norma Jean and My Week with Marilyn, but Blonde is so gloomy it just doesn't fit the theme. On the plus side, blondes can be quirky, but never boring.
Blonde will premiere on Netflix on September 28.
