Two Toyota GR Yaris Special Editions launched

Toyota GR Yaris

Toyota is launching two special edition versions of the Toyota GR Yaris and these new models are inspired by its world champion drivers, Sébastien Ogier and Kalle Rovanperä and they come with a range of upgrades over the standard cars.

Both vehicles feature the most recent iteration of the GR Yaris’ 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine. This advanced powertrain delivers 280 DIN horsepower and 390 Nm of torque. Additionally, they are equipped with a six-speed intelligent manual transmission (6iMT) for an enhanced driving experience.

Toyota GR Yaris

The new models have been developed from concept versions which were shown at the 2023 Tokyo Auto Salon, under the supervision of Ogier, who won two of his eight WRC driver’s titles with TGR-WRT, in 2020 and 2021, and Rovanperä, the winner in 2022 and 2023.

Their creation has been inspired by the desire of Toyota Motor Corporation Chairman and Master Driver Akio Toyoda – alias “Morizo” – to express his respect and gratitude to the drivers “who hone and grow our cars in rallies” and to the teams, the rally organisers and the sport’s fans.

New Toyota GR Yaris debuts at 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon

Toyota GR Yaris

The new Toyota GR Yaris debuted at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon and the car gets several upgrades over the previous model, it now comes with 280 horsepower (206 kW) and 390 Nm of torque.

The various other upgrades including a new eight-speed GAZOO Racing Direct Automatic Transmission, plus a redesigned interior, improved suspension, and more.

The new Toyota GR Yaris makes its world debut today at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon, benefiting from technical, design and construction enhancements that promise to deliver an even greater driving experience.

Toyota GR Yaris

The GR Yaris met with such praise and enthusiasm on its launch, Toyota might have considered its work was done. Here was a car that at a stroke stormed to the top of the hot-hatch segment, a rally-born, thoroughbred machine that left all competitors in its wake.

Think again: this was in fact just the start of the story. In the three years since the first car came off the line, intensive efforts have been invested in making it even better: more powerful, more responsive, more engaging and – believe it – more rewarding to drive.

Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 received FIA homologation

Toyota GR Yaris Rally2

The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team has announced that the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 has received FIA homologation and it will now be able to take part in the FIA World Rally Championship.

Previously Toyota has been racing their GR Yaris Rally1 hybrid, in the FIA World Endurance Championship and now customers will be able to use the new Toyota GR Yaris Rally2.

With the granting of the homologation certificate, distribution of the GR Yaris Rally2 can now begin to customers all over the world. The commemorative first car is scheduled to be delivered to ROOKIE Racing, led by Morizo, while four teams are set to participate in Rallye Monte-Carlo from January 25-28 with the GR Yaris Rally2.

Toyota GR Yaris Rally2

The first four-wheel drive sports car to be developed exclusively by Toyota for 20 years, the GR Yaris was created by TGR with a mission to win in the WRC. Rather than a car made for TGR to win, the GR Yaris Rally2 is a car made for customers to win: this is the start of our new challenge.

The car made its public debut at Rally Japan in 2022, when Morizo took the wheel and measured its performance. Since then, we received a lot of feedback from the many drivers who have tested the Rally2 car on different surfaces and in different conditions. More than 15,000 competition kilometres have been covered, including participation in the Japanese Rally Championship which also served as testing on Japanese roads.

New Toyota Yaris Cross models join the range

Toyota Yaris Cross

The Toyota Yaris Cross was unveiled earlier this year and now Toyota is adding in some new models to the range. There will now be an electrifies more powerful Hybrid 130 powertrain which will be available in the high-end Cross models, these will include the GR Sport and the Premiere edition.

The established 1.5-litre full hybrid electric system has been equipped with a new transaxle that features a larger and more powerful electric motor-generator (MG1). This, together with adjustments to the power control unit (PCU), delivers a 14% increase in total system output, from 116 DIN hp/85 kW to 132 DIN hp/97 kW. At the same time, the MG2 motor’s torque has been increased across the entire rev band, with the maximum rising by 30% from 141 to 185 Nm.

The result is faster acceleration, with the 0-100 km/h time reduced by half a second to 10.7 seconds and the 80-120 km/h overtaking benchmark brought down by 0.4 seconds to 8.9 seconds. Where CO2 emissions are concerned, the impact is modest with the new system achieving a best-in-class 103-122 g/km.

These statistics are only part of the story; equally significant is the impact on the driving experience. Engine, drive motor and hybrid battery performance have all been maximised in the Hybrid 130. This, together with a higher level of torque at all engine speeds, gives the car a more dynamic and responsive feel with acceleration and deceleration performance that adds enjoyment to every drive, whether on urban streets or out on the open road. Drive motor assistance in response to the driver’s use of the accelerator has been enhanced to help produce faithful handling and a linear acceleration feel.
