Exclusive: UTHealth Campaign Raises 4 Million, New Behavioral Health Sciences School Coming Soon

When Dr Giuseppe Colasardo, president of the Texas Health Science Center in Houston and president of the Alec Williams Endoid, suggested the global fundraising idea, he was told the school was too small to raise such funds. UTHealth was founded in 1972.

Colasardo pushed back. UTHealth Houston knew that college deans and board members needed research funding to win the war on recruiting healthcare talent. Fortunately, he also knows donors who can provide transformative gifts.

The initial target was $500 million. On April 20, Colacerdo announced that the Mission Many Faces campaign had raised a total of $534.4 million, the largest donation in Houston history.

More than 11,315 donors contributed to this record, which will contribute three points to the campaign's success: $184.5 million to educate the next generation of doctors and nurses. $182.2 million to improve access to health care in Houston. and $105 million to advance mental health and behavior.

Key prizes in 2015 included $75 million from the John B. McGovern Foundation, which was awarded to John B., in the College of Biomedical Informatics, who works to advance human health through data science. The school was named the D. Bradley McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics at UTHealth Houston in his honour.

McWilliams, a University of Texas student who grew up in Bellaire, contemplated this gift for years before turning to computer science.

“When I decided to give an heirloom as a gift, it suited me. I give for many reasons, especially at the station where I make medical contact. I have a lot of medical problems,” he said. He said. “I can help all of them by giving to the School of Biomedical Informatics. It will help all the different schools in some way. It will lead in all areas of AI.”

Additional support from Jane and Robert Cizik in 2017 and the John S. Dunn Foundation in 2021 for the new Jane and Robert Cizik School of Nursing and the John S. Dunn Foundation. And serves as successive director of the Center for Behavioral Sciences.

The new seventh school was approved last month by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Council and the UT System Board of Regents. The School of Behavioral Health Sciences at UTHealth Houston will offer more than 35 degree or certificate programs over the next decade.

"Our strategy is to fill this huge gap in healthcare," said Colasardo.

He added that behavioral health is called mental health. Progress in this field has been a pillar of the "Missionary Mission".

Other areas of interest include teacher recruitment, grants and research funding.

"The education and training of doctors, nurses and community health workers has always been a hotspot for people in this community," said Cosardo. “Especially for those who have taught themselves and know firsthand the difficulties of training. Most importantly, these students want to succeed.”

The campaign's focus on health care may seem self-explanatory, although Cosardo makes an important distinction.

"Everyone wants a good nanny and they want to be cared for like I was in Italy and I carried my little bag to the village," she said. “If they have serious health problems, they want to be treated here. Who hasn't dealt with Alzheimer's or depression or stroke? It doesn't save a millionaire or a billionaire or a patient in a county jail. He felt this support and this fostered connection. "

Seattle's life sciences workforce and federal research funding have grown rapidly since 2019, according to a new report from real estate firm CBRE.

The Seattle region ranked third among metropolitan areas for life sciences job growth, with 25% growth from 2019 to 2022. What's more, R&D jobs in the region grew by 39.3%. Only the San Francisco and Boston areas had faster job growth in this sector.

From 2019 to 2022, Seattle also had the largest increase in NIH funding of any urban region. NIH funding in the city increased by nearly 30%, reaching $1.39 billion in 2022. The University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center were the top recipients of NIH funds, receiving $591.6 million and $473 million, respectively, of the .9 million received.

In 2022, life sciences funding in Seattle will top $600 million, compared to a record $1 billion in 2021. More than 1.6 million square feet of research space is under construction in the Seattle area, about a third of which is already overdue. .

RELATED: Biotech industry leaders share cautious optimism for 2023 amid economic slowdown and layoffs

"Companies in the Puget Sound region are approaching this year with cautious expectations," said Austin Arper, vice president of CBRE Life Sciences in Seattle.

"Continued economic uncertainty will slow real estate decision-making for most, but continued NIH funding of our leading research institutions will continue to drive innovation and growth in the industry," said Arper.

Seattle-based Life Science Washington recently released its 2022 Capital Investment Performance report, which lists 50 life sciences deals that have raised more than $1.19 billion for the state's industry. The team's report covers all pre-IPO deals and also includes non-venture fund investments, such as NIH campaign support and early stage angel investments.

VC deals for Seattle companies in 2022 included $93 million for Bonum Therapeutics, $96 million for Cajal Neuroscience, and $44.4 million for AltPep. Affini-T Therapeutics, which has offices in Seattle and Boston, received $175 million.

The US Life Sciences Outlook to 2023 report also assesses national trends.

The report concludes that the life sciences industry as a whole has returned to a "more normal pace" after rising in 2020 and 2021.

"Many indicators have declined from their 2020 and 2021 peaks, but are still above pre-pandemic levels. There is a lot of promising research that will drive this industry forward when lending conditions are met," said Matt Gardner, head of life sciences at CBRE.

Other information from the report:

  • After surging during the pandemic, venture capital funding is now approaching pre-pandemic levels. In the first quarter of 2023, venture funding increased by 20% compared to pre-pandemic levels.
  • The IPO market has cooled significantly. The total cost of the IPO exceeded $10 billion in 2021, but only exceeded $2 billion in 2022.
  • Over the past decade, NIH's annual funding has increased by 62%.
  • R&D spending by life sciences companies has increased by approximately 40% over the past five years.
  • Last year, US life sciences companies amassed a cash reserve of $200 billion. It is lower than in the previous three years, but more than in 2018.
  • Laboratory space in the top 13 US life sciences markets has grown 47% over the past five years and is expected to grow 22% over the next two years.
  • Layoffs in the life sciences industry continue, with more than 50 companies announcing layoffs in the first two months of 2023 compared to the first two months of 2022. But overall, the unemployment rate among the life sciences was low, around 2%.
  • Many potential treatments are in the pipeline. There are currently more than 11,500 ongoing Phase 2 and 3 clinical trials in the US, significantly more than in 2012.

In the past decade, the number of clinical trials in the United States has increased significantly. (CBRE Graphics) © Provided by Geekwire The number of US clinical trials has increased dramatically over the past decade. (CBRE Graphics)

Life Sciences Industry Focus Of New Blacksburg Laboratory Bench Facility

Life Sciences Industry Focus Of New Blacksburg Laboratory Bench Facility

A Virginia Tech think tank is about to open a science lab to address the lack of space that's forcing some entrepreneurs to invent at home and stifling growth.

A nearby business park is made up of people like Mickey Cowden, a robot and software engineer with an underground electronics bench. At first, the dryer vent is defective, but it is used to remove the smoke.

"If I weld for too long, I still get headaches," says the owner of Cowden Technologies.

The consulting firm sees the life sciences and related industries market as an untapped business opportunity in the Roanoke-Blacksburg area that requires the construction of large and low-cost laboratory facilities. The company published its final report in 2021 and answered yes to the industry's feasibility assessment.

People also read…

According to Maryland-based consultancy Logix, the planned lease of another lab in Blacksburg and Roanoke will provide "significant cost savings" to companies that lease space.

After officials realized that much of the state's private lab space was being leased or otherwise negotiated, a coalition of organizations seeking to spur economic growth began construction on two new labs.

While the academy has a lab where basic research is conducted, "you can't run your startup in a university lab," said Brett Malone, president and CEO of the university's research center.

The state's GO Virginia Economic Development Initiative paid more than half of the Blacksburg Institute's $1.1 million cost, with the rest coming from the Virginia Tech Foundation, a private nonprofit research center. Although not a government organization, the research park has been responsible for 40 years of building independent businesses in technology, biotechnology, software, cyber, aerospace and defense.

The lab is located at 2200 Kraft Drive and is called COgro Labs.

"We hope to do it very quickly," Malone said at the March 30 open house. He said the institutes are open to "everyone".

Based on feasibility studies, the life sciences—the study of humans, plants, and animals—support industries such as pharmaceuticals, biomedicine, and industries such as medical devices, agricultural biosciences, diagnostics, health informatics, and machine learning. Prepared for a laboratory project. The report, known as the Multi-User Laboratory Feasibility Study, was published in September 2021.

The facility includes laboratory wet benches for developing technologies using microorganisms and chemicals. There is also a dry lab for activities like computing. If a bench is rented, the home's dry lab where Cowden is welded is located on a workbench under an exhaust fan connected to an air handling system filter.

While the office collaboration center provides tenants with work machines such as copiers, the new Blacksburg lab has ultra-low temperature storage rooms, biosafety cabinets, fume hoods, autoclaves, centrifuges, shakers, shakers and mixers. Each bench has a lockable seat and a cabinet for storing pipettes.

Applications are being received from interested parties, according to lab director Tina Taylor, who expects the lab to open in May. The entry fee is $700 per month per seat, he said, adding that fees will increase over time. The rent includes facilities, use of special equipment, personal protective equipment and access to a shared work space in the office in the COgro lobby.

Taylor, a public health researcher with laboratory management experience, will help operate equipment and ensure safety and compliance, Malone said.

The Blacksburg facility appears to be an example of a larger lab planned in part for Roanoke. While the Blacksburg lab will have 18 beds in a 2,900-square-foot space, the future Roanoke lab is planned to be housed in a 40,000-square-foot building on South Jefferson Street.

Virginia officials approved the Roanoke facility in a $15.7 million grant announced in mid-February. The city of Roanoke will contribute $1.9 million to the federal pandemic relief fund.

Overall, the project is expected to create 125 jobs with an average annual salary of $80,000. Officials said the state will return the money in less than five years.

Renting a small space in a professional aerial control laboratory helps Cowden, an unmanned aerial vehicle station for agricultural use capable of delivering payloads, data and payloads. He said he hopes to get a position in the lab as long as the money is not available in six months.

His home is in Fairlawn, 13 miles from the Blacksburg Research Center, and he has already rented an office at COgro.

Cowden's wife, Radford University dance professor Amy Vankirk, toured the new lab.

"Everything seems safe. A house with a 9-month-old baby doesn't have these welding fumes," he said.

The site's consultant said in his report that society does not value the development of the technology industry. "The general public remains committed to traditional manufacturing and does not necessarily recognize the importance of technical and life science jobs," the report said.

Demand for workers with traditional manufacturing skills and traditional manufacturing skills is declining, the report noted. The lab is designed to help tech-driven communities bring STEM education into elementary schools and support an "innovation ecosystem" where they can start their own businesses.

The region's life sciences and related businesses – present and future – will benefit from a strong regional ecosystem that includes 25 higher education institutions. Multiple health systems; Various business development competitions, incubators and accelerators; and a list of non-profit economic development organizations. Local and state governments support and fund businesses.

The 2021 report highlighted the issue, although private venture capital programs in this area were weak. The number of consulting life science companies is "small". Within 19 months of the report's release, this number had grown to 40-50 firms.

This year, Johnson & Johnson has admitted three local life sciences companies to the biotech accelerator and may select two more. The company's support complements the new lab space to strengthen the ecosystem, he said.

"You shouldn't feel like you're missing out," said Lisa Garcia, who runs the RAMP Career Accelerator in Roanoke.

ISE academic leaders are adapting to the pandemic disruption.

CND Life Sciences Closes Series Seed 3 Round, Reaches .5 Million In Total Equity Raised

CND has raised an additional $1 million in venture funding from Top Corner Capital

Scottsdale, Arizona. , April 6, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — CND Life Sciences, a leading medical technology company developing reliable skin tests to help doctors diagnose neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia, today announced an initial third round of funding of $4.5 million . This follow-up round brought the company's total seed funding to $12.5 million to accelerate the commercialization of the Syn-One Test® , the first commercially available test capable of detecting abnormal alpha-synuclein aggregates via a simple skin biopsy. Many existing and new investors participated in this round, and Top Corner Capital provided a synchronous financing structure, demonstrating CND's solid progress and enthusiasm for the future.

Life Sciences VC Firm Expands To Boston, Signs 58K SF Lease With Beacon Capital

Life Sciences VC Firm Expands To Boston, Signs 58K SF Lease With Beacon Capital

Proposal submission to Beacon Capital Partners for extension of Southline development in Dorchester.

A Chicago-based life sciences venture capital firm is entering the Boston market, signing a lease to renovate the former headquarters of the Boston Globe.

Portal Innovations plans to occupy 58,000 square feet of lab and office space in Beacon Capital Partners' Southline development in Dorchester, it was announced Wednesday. The company plans to expand to 22,000 square feet as the remaining space is under development and will be fully occupied in the first half of 2024.

"We are excited to bring our unique business model to a new part of Boston's life sciences ecosystem," Portal Innovations CEO John Flavin said in a press release. “Gateway is committed to supporting entrepreneurs and founders by providing a capital model designed for seed capital investment, access to strategic lab space and management expertise to venture these ventures.

The portal will work with ZoE Life Sciences and Beacon Capital to expand the space and invest in more life sciences companies. This is Portal's first location in the Boston market, with two additional offices in Atlanta and Chicago.

The lease announcement comes after the Beacon revealed plans Friday to expand the planned redevelopment of the former Boston Globe headquarters on Morrissey Street. The developer has proposed a new six-story lab and office project at 305K SF near the South Line, with an elevated walkway connecting the two, The Boston Globe first reported.

Portal isn't Southline's only venture capital. Venture capital firm Flagship Pioneering was the building's first anchor tenant, acquiring more than 45,000 square feet with apparel brand Nobull, which signed a 96,000-square-foot lease through February 2022. According to Boston, the front door of the building is 20% leased. Business magazine magazine.

Beacon has also partnered with life sciences business organization MassBio to create a 4K SF training center set to open early next year. The center will fill skills gaps in the industry and help area residents obtain certifications to help them pursue careers in the life sciences.

The Morrissey Boulevard area is starting to form its own life sciences cluster. Accordia Partners has proposed 4 million square feet of lab and office space for its Dorchester Bay City development at Center Court Mass LLC, 35-75 Morrissey Blvd. The master plan calls for the construction of four biological science buildings.
