WhatsApp for iPhone’s design refresh gives it a modern look

WhatsApp is getting a fresh new look with updated icons for a modern look. The revamped layout makes it easy to get to your chats quicker.

The refreshed WhatsApp design is rolling out for both iPhone and Android.

Meta has been testing the fresh WhatsApp look in beta for a few months now. The updated layout neatly integrates all the changes and features the messaging platform has received over the last year or two.

A key change of the revamped design is that it uses WhatsApp’s green shade as the accent color. Meta says it “considered over 35 different color iterations, ultimately aligning with WhatsApp’s iconic green and opting for a palette that allows for harmonious color pairings throughout the app.”

As a part of the design revamp, Meta has updated the icons to a rounded, outlined style to match its new iconography. All illustrations have also been updated.

Despite the modern look and feel, Meta has ensured the app retains the same familiarity. This is important since over a billion people use WhatsApp daily, and a big design overhaul can confuse non-tech-savvy folks.

WhatsApp for iOS gets a new attachment menu

On Android, the dark mode is now a shade darker than before. The change helps provide higher contrast and deeper tones to reduce eye strain. On iPhone, the new attachment menu should make sending files, creating polls, etc., easier. The chat background also gets a refresh and features new artwork.

WhatsApp’s design makeover comes within weeks of Meta rolling out passkey support for the iPhone app.

New iPad Pros Support Lower Refresh Rate, But Lack Always-On Display

[ad_1]

The new 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models are equipped with OLED displays that support a refresh rate as low as 10Hz, but the devices still lack an always-on display option like the iPhone and Apple Watch have, according to Apple’s tech specs.

While the iPad Pro has supported ProMotion since 2017, the device only supported refresh rates between 24Hz and 120Hz until now. The new iPad Pro models use low-power LTPO technology, according to display industry expert Ross Young, allowing the display to ramp down to 10Hz for static content. This change will contribute to lower power consumption, but advertised battery life is unchanged overall compared to the previous iPad Pro generation.

The same situation happened a few years ago with the iPhone 13 Pro models, which also support ProMotion down to 10Hz, but lack an always-on display option. The feature finally arrived on the iPhone with the iPhone 14 Pro models, which can ramp down to 1Hz, and Apple Watch models with an always-on display also reach 1Hz.

All in all, the iPad Pro is unlikely to get an always-on display option until if and when it too supports a 1Hz refresh rate.

Apple says the iPad Pro now features “state-of-the-art tandem OLED technology that uses two OLED panels and combines the light from both to provide phenomenal full-screen brightness.” The new iPad Pro models can achieve up to 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness for SDR content, compared to 600 nits for the previous-generation models.

The new iPad Pro models are available to order starting today and launch on Wednesday, May 15.

Apple Likely Planning to Skip M3 Mac Mini for M4 Refresh in Late 2024

[ad_1]

Apple is likely to skip an M3 version of the Mac mini in favor of a bigger update with M4 chips toward the end of the year, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.

M4 Mac Mini Feature
In the latest edition of his “Power On” newsletter, Gurman explained that he does not expect Apple to refresh the ‌Mac mini‌ with M3 chips. Apple last updated the ‌Mac mini‌ with the M2 and ‌M2‌ Pro chips in January 2023. Other new features included two extra Thunderbolt 4 ports and an HDMI 2.1 port for ‌M2‌ Pro configurations, Wi-Fi 6E support with a compatible router, and Bluetooth 5.3.

Gurman previously said that Apple is planning to release new ‌Mac mini‌ models with M4 and M4 Pro chips “between the end of 2024 and early 2025.” Now, he has clarified that with new Mac minis arriving as soon as the end of the year, there is not sufficient “room for M3 models to come out before then, so it’s probably safe to say that those Mac desktops will skip the M3 generation.”

Such a move would not be unprecedented since the iMac skipped the ‌M2‌ chip entirely, holding off until a bigger performance bump with the M3 chip late last year. With the M4 chip series, the ‌Mac mini‌ should get a significant CPU performance improvement compared to the existing models with the ‌M2‌ series. The M4 chips are also rumored to have a faster Neural Engine for artificial intelligence tasks.
