Mac mini might skip Apple M3 processor in favor of M4
With no M3 version on the way, iMac mini M2 will stay around until the M4 chip arrives.

There will never be a version of the Mac mini with the Apple M3 processor, according to a reliable tipster. Instead, the inexpensive desktop will wait for the next-generation chip.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that the wait supposedly won’t be terribly long.

Mac mini could pass over M3 in favor of M4

The Apple M3 launched in autumn 2023 in MacBook Pro and iMac, and came to MacBook Air early this year. It’s still rolling out, with a new, more powerful iteration of the chip supposedly headed for the Mac Studio desktop in mid-year.

But the replacement M4 is already on the horizon. And the next Mac mini will be on hold until that chip arrives, reports Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman in the paywalled section of the new edition of his Power On newsletter.

The M4 iMac mini will arrive at the end of 2024 or early 2025, and there simply isn’t time to squeeze an M3 version in before that launch, according to Gurman. Which means the M2 version will stay on shelves for longer.

When the next-generation Mac mini arrives, it’ll supposedly be available in both M4 and M4 Pro variants.

This compact desktop is the least expensive Mac — the base model is only $599 — and it’s aimed at budget-conscious consumers. It’s really not surprising that it’s not always kept updated with the latest-and-greatest processor.

That said, the M2 Mac mini is hardly underpowered. With an 8-core CPU and a 10-core GPU, the machine can easily handle a typical consumer’s browsing and light photo/video editing needs.

Those who need a significant step up in performance can get the version with the M2 Pro chip. This model ships with a 10-core CPU, a 16-core GPU, and 16GB of unified system memory. This variant also packs four Thunderbolt 4 ports alongside two USB-A ports so users can hook up as many high-bandwidth accessories as needed, including more than two monitors.

Samsung Galaxy S25 processor, RAM could be faster than iPhone 16 Pro

For the first time in years, Samsung’s flagship smartphone could be faster than the competing iPhone. If some reports are to be believed, the Galaxy S25, expected to be released early next year, could have a faster processor and RAM than the iPhone 16 Pro.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and LPDDR6 DRAM could make Galaxy S25 perform faster than iPhone 16 Pro

According to a report from AjuNews, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are speeding up the mass production of LPDDR6 DRAM to get a lead in the AI-driven industry. This next-generation RAM offers greatly increased data bandwidth, necessary for faster processing of AI tasks on the device. Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC), which is the international semiconductor standards organization, is expected to formally announce the specs of LPDDR6 DRAM in the second half of this year (possibly in September 2024).

Samsung LPDDR5X RAM 8.5Gbps

LPDDR5 was announced in February 2019, and LPDDR6 is expected to launch five years later. While there is no information about LPDDR6’s speeds, LPDDR5 has a bandwidth of 6.4Gbps, while LPDDR5X has a data bandwidth of 8.5Gbps. Samsung and SK Hynix are said to be focused on increasing efficiency and lowering the production cost of LPDDR6 DRAM rather than increasing its performance.

LPDDR6 memory could be used in phones featuring the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset. This is the same chipset that will likely power the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and Galaxy S25 Ultra in at least some markets. Similar to the Galaxy S24 Ultra, even the Galaxy S25 Ultra could exclusively use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 in all the countries worldwide.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 features Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU cores developed by Nuvia. These CPU cores have already been used in the Snapdragon X Elite processor, which will be used in several Windows-based laptops in the second half of this year. These CPU cores are said to perform faster than the CPU cores inside Apple’s upcoming chip, the A18 Pro.

Qualcomm has been using beefier GPUs than Apple over the past couple of years. So, the Galaxy S25 series with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 could have a faster CPU, GPU, and DRAM than the competing iPhone 16 Pro series.

Alongside the Galaxy A35, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A55, its new mid-range phone. It is the company’s most premium-looking and feeling mid-range phone yet.

Samsung has used a metal-and-glass body for the Galaxy A55. It is the first Galaxy A series phone to feature a metal frame, and its front and rear are covered by glass. As usual, this new mid-range Galaxy A phone features an IP67 dust and water resistance rating.

It has a 6.6-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, Vision Booster, and Gorilla Glass Victus. Its peak screen brightness can reach up to 1,000 nits under direct sunlight and even higher in HDR scenes. It has stereo speakers for a more immersive media consumption experience. The phone has an under-display optical fingerprint reader.

The 4nm Exynos 1480 processor powers the Galaxy A55. It has four high-performance Cortex-A78 CPU cores clocked at 2.75GHz, four power-efficient Cortex-A55 CPU cores clocked at 2GHz, and the Xclipse 530 GPU based on AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture. It is said to have a 15% faster CPU and a 32% faster GPU, so playing high-end games shouldn’t be an issue.

The phone has 8GB/12GB RAM and 128GB/256GB internal storage. It is the first Galaxy A series phone with up to 12GB RAM. A microSD card slot allows for further storage expansion.

Samsung is shipping the Galaxy A55 with Android 14-based One UI 6.1 pre-installed. The mid-range phone, like others from Samsung, will get four major Android OS updates and security updates for five years. It features Auto Blocker, Samsung Knox, and Samsung Knox Vault.

The Galaxy A55 has improved overall cameras. It has three cameras on the rear: a 50MP primary camera with OIS and autofocus, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 5MP macro camera. On the front, it has a 32MP selfie camera. The 50MP and 13MP cameras can record 4K 30fps videos with VDIS (EIS for video stabilization).

The advanced AI ISP inside the Exynos 1480 brings improved low-light images on a Galaxy A series phone for the first time. Thanks to Nightography, the Galaxy A55 also has Night Portrait mode. It is also the first Galaxy A phone with 12-bit Super HDR Video for a wider dynamic range and deeper colors.

The phone is powered by a 5,000mAh battery and supports 25W fast charging. Its connectivity features include GPS, 5G, a dual-SIM card slot, eSIM, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, and a USB Type-C port. The phone will be available in four colors: Ice Blue, Green, Lilac, and Navy.

MediaTek has launched its latest mobile processor, the new MediaTek Dimensity 8300 which gets a range of upgrades over the previous generation processor. The new processor comes with a 20% faster CPU and it offers 30% peak gains in power efficiency.

According to the press release, the new Dimensity 8300 offers 60% greater performance and it come with 55% better power efficiency, plus it has a range of generative AI capabilities and low-power and adaptive gaming technology.

“With MediaTek’s optimized Dimensity 8000 series, consumers don’t have to pick and choose between accessibility and premier experiences like flagship-grade memory or accelerated AI capabilities—they can have it all,” said Dr. Yenchi Lee, Deputy General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communications Business Unit. “The Dimensity 8300 unlocks new possibilities for the premium smartphone segment, offering users in-hand AI, hyper-realistic entertainment opportunities, and seamless connectivity without sacrificing efficiency.” 

The MediaTek Dimensity 8300 is the first premium-tier SoC to come with full generative AI support, thanks to the APU 780 AI processor integrated into the chipset. This enables the Dimensity 8300 to provide support to developers to build innovative applications that leverage large language models (LLMs) up to 10B, as well as stable diffusion. The APU 780 features the same architecture as the flagship Dimensity 9300 SoC, resulting in 2x improvement in INT and FP16 computation and a 3.3x boost in AI performance over the Dimensity 8200.These AI capabilities, combined with MediaTek’s 14-bit HDR-ISP Imagiq 980, will take premium smartphone photography and video capturing to new heights.
