Column: The Key Economies To Track For Industry Decarbonisation Road Maps

Column: The Key Economies To Track For Industry Decarbonisation Road Maps

LITTLETON, Colo., Oct. 13 (Reuters) – Much of the energy transition debate has focused on electrifying car fleets and using more renewable energy in power generation, regardless of how the leading energy industry will run. world economy, coal.

If rapid and sustainable reductions in fossil fuel emissions are to be achieved worldwide, such major sources of employment, tax revenues and national wealth must not only be at the forefront, but also play a major role in accelerating the transition. Low carbon economy. .

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), industry accounts for 29% of global energy consumption and a quarter of emissions, which has significant potential for global energy transition efforts.

Join now for unlimited access to Reuters.com

But because of the marginal nature of manufacturing and producing energy-intensive intermediate goods such as cement, chemicals and metals, industry tends to resist changes that erode profits.

The picture is further complicated by the uneven rate of industrial development across countries and around the world, making it impossible to decide whether and when the industry as a whole will finally be ready for the fossil fuel transition.

But the three major industrial economies, China, Germany and the United States, are each undergoing dramatic energy-saving reforms that are reshaping their industrial scenarios and driving greater change around the world.

Coal factory floor

Any industry discussion should include China, the world's largest producer and exporter of goods.

It has representatives from all types of industries at all levels of complexity, from very large manufacturers, from machinery, metals and electronics to ceramics, batteries and toys.

Industry is the backbone of China's economy, accounting for about half of total energy consumption and about a quarter of employment, according to IEA and World Bank statistics.

Therefore, other countries looking to develop their manufacturing bases turn to China for guidance, especially on how to reduce energy consumption and emissions.

Coal remains China's main industrial energy source, accounting for 43% of the sector's total energy supply in 2019, according to IEA data.

That's down from more than 60% in 2010, but coal's share is expected to fall further as Beijing pursues aggressive pollution reduction measures.

A third of China's industry is off the grid, up from 22% in 2010, and rapid electrification of manufacturers and factories is expected.

Natural gas In 2019, industrial power increased from 4% to 9% in 2015 and is expected to grow rapidly until Russia invades Ukraine this year.

China is still expected to use natural gas for power generation, but unless Beijing steps in with subsidies or fuel quotas it has used in the past, the cost-cutting industry could slow the switch from coal to gas.

Particularly for industry, Beijing is expected to rapidly expand its renewable energy supply, strengthen its position as a world leader in green energy, and ensure the long-term competitiveness of its operations.

With the proposed pioneering use of hydrogen as an industrial energy fuel, this will benefit Chinese manufacturers and help China become a leader in industrial decarbonization capabilities that can be deployed on a large scale in Asia.

Restarting the European economic engine

Germany also said it was at the forefront of carbon emissions, or until the Russo-Ukrainian war crippled the country's manufacturing base, sending electricity prices to record highs this year.

But the energy crisis has prompted the country's governments and industry leaders to accelerate a comprehensive energy transition strategy that will build the country's LNG import terminal in record time and dramatically increase domestic renewable energy supplies.

As a result, German industry, which accounted for 25% of Germany's total energy consumption in 2019, could switch from natural gas and external power grids to mostly electricity in much the same way.

If the country's major automakers and industry leaders can secure a technological and competitive advantage, other European manufacturers are likely to follow suit.

american dream

With the inflation adjustment (IRA) just introduced, American companies will be motivated to implement energy-efficient technologies en masse in the years to come, just as the country's power plants offer more renewable options. Read more

If both trends go as officials expect, US producers will benefit from lower energy costs and the creation of additional industries linked to the broader global energy transition, another core component of the IRA.

Throughout the year, industry accounted for 17% of total energy consumption in the US economy in 2019.

But large government funding and generous corporate incentives to reduce carbon emissions will help the United States become a world leader in helping many industrial economies chart a path to emission reductions.

Small Business Statistics In 2022

Small business owners make up the majority of businesses in the United States. From restaurants and grocery stores to farms, real estate agencies, and mechanics, local businesses with fewer than 100 employees are considered small businesses.

These small businesses are run by different people and no two businesses are the same. From the number of employees to the revenue per company, small businesses come in all shapes and sizes. Let's take a closer look at some small business facts.

the light

mains plug

  • As of 2020, there are 31.7 million small businesses in the United States, which is 99.9% of all businesses in America. (US Small Business Administration)
  • More than half of small business owners are 55 or older. (US Census Bureau)
  • 9.1% of small business owners have experience. (result)
  • One of the most common reasons people start their own business is to become their own boss. 66 percent of Cox business respondents cited this as a reason for starting a small business. (Cox business)
  • last year 82% of small businesses; 50% survive the five-year stage; Only 35% survived ten years. (Bureau of Labor Statistics)

General Small Business Statistics

Whether a business is classified as a small business is largely determined by the revenue it generates and the number of employees. The Small Business Administration sets standards by industry. For example, a small lumber company may have fewer than 500 employees, but a soft drink manufacturer may have 1,250 employees. In terms of revenue, there is a wide range by industry, with the average small business earning between $1 million (or less) and $41.5 million.

Small businesses exist in every industry. Freelance writers such as retail salespeople, hairdressers, tax professionals, lawyers and private sector doctors can also qualify as small business owners.

There are 33.2 million small businesses in the United States, which make up 99.9 percent of all American businesses, according to the Small Business Administration. Even some of the big name chains you see may operate locally and qualify as small businesses. Guidant Financial surveyed 4,500 current and future business owners and found that 41 percent of those surveyed were franchise owners.

Small businesses exist in every industry, but some dominate. Below is a chart based on a Guide Financial survey showing the biggest players in the small business world

Business Ownership Statistics

The business world is diverse, but some groups are more likely to start a business. Note that the statistics in this section apply to all US business owners, not just those classified as small businesses. However, remember that 99.9 percent of all American businesses are small businesses.

Business ownership by gender

Today, men own more small businesses than women. According to the Census Bureau's latest annual business survey, one in five US employers is owned by a woman. However, women's businesses grew by 0.6% year-on-year.

Business ownership by nation

Just as there are gender differences in the small business community, there are also ethnic differences. The U.S. Census shows that businesses are run not only by men, but primarily by white men. The table below shows the ownership of the different groups.

Source: Zippy Business Owner Demographics and Statistics in the United States
White 70.8%
Hispanics or Latin Americans 14.4%
Asia 6.2%
Black or African American 6.0%
unknown 2.1%
American Indians and Alaska Natives 0.5%

Business ownership by age

Small businesses are owned and operated by people of all ages. However, it is not surprising that older generations are more entrepreneurial than younger ones. Seniors have more time to build credit, making financing easier. They have more experience in the world of work and more time to save money to invest in their business.

Business Ownership at the Education Level

A college degree doesn't necessarily prepare you to run a business, but it does make the financial part easier. Also, going to college can build a network and support system that can provide the capital or connections needed to start a business.

As you can see in the table below, graduates make up the largest percentage of business owners (52%). But a bachelor's degree is not necessary in all fields, and associate's degrees are a big part of the business world.

Small business financial statistics

Small businesses have unique financial needs compared to large businesses. Average small business revenues are different, salaries are different, and borrowing needs are different.

Business income statistics

A small business's income depends largely on its industry and location. Of course, a restaurant in a big city like Los Angeles or New York will be more profitable than a restaurant in rural America. According to the 2019 US Census Statistics Survey of American Business (released in 2022), the median income for the self-employed in covered businesses was $55,858. Fortunately, most established companies (63%) say they are profitable.

Just as there is a wealth gap between men and women, there is also a large income gap. Biz2Credit Women-owned businesses have an average annual revenue of $475,707, while male-owned businesses have an average annual revenue of $675,643.

Small business financial statistics

While 78 percent of startups use only their own funds to launch their businesses, many small businesses need funding at some point. All told, there were $645 billion in outstanding small business loans in 2019. This number is so high in part because the average SBA loan is $417,316

While loans are an option for businesses that need large amounts of financing, business credit cards are another popular way businesses use them for expenses. Interest rates on credit cards are much higher than business loans, so they are not the best option for long-term financing. However, they are sometimes cheaper and offer bonuses and benefits that commercial loans do not.

Small business success statistics

Despite America's entrepreneurial wealth, the path of the small entrepreneur is not an easy one. Unfortunately, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 18 percent of businesses fail within the first year, 50 percent after five years, and 65 percent fail within 10 percent.

The geographical location can also be the cause of this decline. Zippia found in 2010 that as of 2019, Washington, Michigan, and Kansas were the three states with the biggest declines in business. On the other hand, California, Louisiana and Massachusetts have the highest success rates.

Another factor in the success of a small business is the industry. Not surprisingly, the healthcare industry has the highest success rate, with 60 percent of small businesses remaining open after the fifth year. On the other hand, warehousing, transportation and construction jobs achieved success rates of 30 percent to 40 percent after five years.

So why do small businesses fail? A survey by CBinsights shows that the main reasons companies fail are lack of funding and lack of access to additional security. Obsolescence and obsolete products are two other reasons why some companies fail.

ASU Sidney Poitier Film School Leaders Aim To Expand Educational Opportunities For A Changing Industry

ASU Sidney Poitier Film School Leaders Aim To Expand Educational Opportunities For A Changing Industry

Hollywood veterans Cheryl Boone Isaacs and Peter Murrieta are optimistic that "a lot is possible" in the future as Hollywood and the entertainment industry as a whole expands for stories and diverse perspectives at every level.

Murrieta and Bone Isaacs performed at Thursday's event to announce the recent opening of Arizona State University's Sidney Poitier New American Film School, a program that opened in downtown Los Angeles earlier this year in the former Los Angeles Herald Examiner building at Broadway and 11th Street. He started. Boone Isaacs is the founding principal of Poitiers School and Murita is the school's assistant principal and principal. The two are joined by several other educators to discuss how Hollywood is expanding its business and audience by taking steps toward integration and representation.

Boone Isaacs and Murrieta emphasized the importance of film education being practical enough to allow students to enter production and related entry-level jobs.

“It's no longer enough to pass the baton to a bachelor's+4 to transfer a student from high school to community college. You must answer the question: "How will this help my job search?" How does it help? Murreta said.

Before she became a presenter for such hit shows as Disney's Wizards of Waverly Place and Mr. Iglesias”, Murrieta has worked as a screenwriter on several television shows. In the year In 2002, Hello from Tucson, he got his first chance to create his own show for the now defunct WB network.

Murrieta remembers that Hispanic representation skyrocketed during that time. "Tucson" was inspired by his life in Arizona. He had the Primetime drama series Easter Boulevard and George Lopez had a family comedy on ABC. Finally, change seems inevitable.

"In the 2002/03 season, I felt like it was about to happen," Murita recalls. "We waited, gathered strength and speed.

However, this feeling was short-lived, because the shows were canceled soon the following year – all except "Jorge Lopez", which ran for six seasons until 2007.

“It was like that for a while. Then another wave came, and then it went out. And at some point it dawned on me that there had to be another way, even if we attacked the business from a representative perspective,” he said. Murita

The lack of representation led to what Poitiers school leaders described as a "cultural emergency." Professors Alex Rivera and Cristina Ibarra cite a recent Latino Donor Cooperative study that found Latinos make up less than 4% of shows in the industry. For managers, this number is less than 3%. For cable television, Hispanic representation is much lower, nearly 0% in all categories.

Murrieta's work also includes writing and producing shows such as ABC's short-lived Christyla and Netflix's pop TV revival One Day at a Time. In his first contract with Universal Television, he developed a project close to his genre, Blood and Gold: The Legend of Joaquin Murieta, which he co-wrote. Murrieta's desire to provide similar ski jumping features to other filmmakers prompted him to join the ASU staff, in addition to his successful work on the popular show.

"The idea that if we can't control Hollywood in some other way – that's fine. Then I'm going to go somewhere and create an army that will keep coming as hundreds and hundreds come," Murita said.

ASU's plan will begin by expanding the curriculum to include education in all areas of filmmaking, including music and design, and by allowing more people to earn a four-year film diploma. In addition to a close relationship with ASU's Herberger Institute of Design and Art and the School of Music, students are given multiple avenues for success.

"Movies have great composers and great songs, and we remember a lot of them," said Bon Isaacs, a former Paramount Pictures executive and president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. "Most young people say, "Oh, I like music. "I love the sounds of being immersed in the music business." It's amazing and wonderful. But we want to teach them a lot of pottery.

Boone Isaac said that in addition to expanding its course offerings, the school is partnering with several community colleges to create a program that will allow more community college graduates to earn bachelor's degrees.

"We all know that life has many twists and turns. When you think of turning left, there are many situations where you turn right. We want to introduce industry experts who talk about the hurdles and challenges our students face. "But in the end, determination, passion, love to work and learn is what motivates you. And [students] succeed—that's the definition of success, not someone else's.

Home DNA Tests Have Stripped Anonymity From Donor Conception, With Huge Implications For The Industry

Home DNA Tests Have Stripped Anonymity From Donor Conception, With Huge Implications For The Industry

Cassandra Adams, a housewife, artist and attorney from New Jersey, is always eager to learn more about her legacy. "I've loved genealogy since I was a kid and always ask questions about our family's history, culture and language," says Adams. "I am a family historian – Italian grandfather took me aside to tell all the stories."

When he did a DNA test at home as part of a volunteer study in 2017, he was surprised by the unexpected results. The father's signature mix of British, Dutch and French results in half Italian on the mother's side, as expected, but also half Ashkenazi Jew. That day, he confronted his mother and learned that she was conceived through anonymous sperm donation.

Her world has changed forever.

"Thanks to my DNA match and my mother's guidance, I was able to quickly locate my real father, even though he is anonymous and has no records," says his Right to Know story. This organization supports those affected by the surprising DNA discovery. genetic identity issues and discordant parenting experiences.

Adams suddenly found himself an advocate for MPE (faulty parenting experiences), NPE (non-parental expectations) and the donor community. She hosts online donor groups and supports organizations such as the American Donor Council, Right to Know, Bright Hope and Cure, and others.

"It found my way," he said of his request. “I spent a lot of time working on my discoveries with people in online support groups, writing a lot and trying to explain what was happening to me to people who didn't understand.

"After that, people seemed to agree with what I wrote and I started to discover the healing element in helping others, supporting what we need as donor-born people – especially belated discoveries – and learning how to partially change grief and grief. I'm traumatized into something tangible that can help other people," Adams said. He says.

Donor designs reach mainstream media

Adapted from the hit Netflix documentary, which tells the true story of a fertility doctor who uses his own sperm to impregnate female patients, CNN's special report on donor insemination contributed to The Baby Business news report.

The anonymity of egg or sperm donors has been guaranteed for decades. But with the accessibility of DNA testing at home, anonymity was impossible for many years.

"Many people don't realize how unregulated the fertility industry is, and fraud, error, and negligence happen more often than you might think," said Cara Rubinstein Deyerin, CEO of Right to Know.

"Donor Fraud to Pursue Fertility Fraud Cases." Your nail salon has additional rules. We make people; One case of fraud is one case too. It's a business and the nature of business is always to increase profits," he said.

"According to the Future Market Research Report, the global maternity services market will reach $36 billion next year," he said. "The focus is on the parents' intention to have a child, but not the effect on the child. Our understanding of the impact of assisted reproduction on our father's children is increasing and there will be steps towards transparency and stricter regulations.

Rubinstein Deyerin points out that the change is gradual. As the fertility industry focuses on anonymity, children conceived are now adults, and media across the country are asking, "What rights should donors know?" They ask tough questions, including:

"Anonymity no longer exists," said Rubinstein Deyerin. "People with MPE (experience of parenting a disabled child) often have three goals in terms of their genetic family. First, take a proper medical history. Not knowing half of your medical history has life and death consequences.

"The second is to understand who they are and where they come from… I hope anyone facing a DNA emergency will at least take the time to help with these two goals." "But if you look at your gamete data when you have children, you at least owe them a favor by giving them that information," he said.

Rubinstein Deyerin added, "Some people may want to connect with their new genetic family. That should be a concern for everyone." But the best advice here is to take things slow.

said Wendy Kramer, director and co-founder of the Donor Sibling Registry, a global registry with a mission to connect, educate and empower all members of the donor family.

The 501(c)3 nonprofit organization facilitates mutual understanding between donors, recipients, and descendants so they can share important medical information and explore new relationships.

To highlight some of the industry's concerns, Kramer refers to the article "10 Things Your Doctor, Clinic, or Sperm Bank Won't Tell You." The key points of this study include:

  • Lack of education and transparency for people who donate genetic material
  • Lack of diagnosis for medical problems
  • No data checked
  • The donor's intrinsic desire to know their genetic parents
  • The dangers of keeping secrets include:

Kramer's work in distributor design is personal. "I'm married and my husband is barren," she said. "My donor son [Ryan] wanted to know if he had any half-siblings and if his biological father would be open to a relationship."

"Sperm banks and clinics didn't help at all, so we took matters into our own hands," Kramer said. "Since I gave birth to my son under these circumstances, I've always felt it was my responsibility to help him find answers to his questions about his background, medical history and genetics."

Since its founding in 2000, the Donor Sibling Registry has helped connect more than 23,000 of its 81,000 members with first- and second-degree genetic relatives. Wendy's son, Ryan Kramer, co-founded the company with him.

Test on adjustment

"The fertility industry in the United States wants regulation to bring us in line with the rest of the world," said Rubinstein Deyerin. "Technology often develops faster than law."

To understand the unregulated industry, many organizations and lawmakers introduce laws that create impact. For example, at the national level, a recently passed federal law requires sperm and egg donors to provide mandatory medical information.

A law in Colorado will end anonymous sperm and egg donation by 2025. A similar bill is underway in New York. While the rules are a step in the right direction, experts and advocates of donor-designed spaces agree that there is still a long way to go.

"The future of donor conception should be like that of celebrity donors," Adams said. "They want to be included, they want to be known, they want to be recognized by the family. Expanding the definition of family is a very progressive thing.

"The person the donor conceived never replaced them, and their place was never given to anyone who helped create them," Adams continued. "In this case, the person does not have the autonomy and power to make their own decisions about how to express their relationship. Individuals conceived by donors must not intentionally separate themselves from their culture."

For those who are just learning that they were conceived through a donor, or who have had smooth parenting experience, there are resources that can help.

AmericanJetBlue Antitrust Trial Testing Limits Of Industry Consolidation

AmericanJetBlue Antitrust Trial Testing Limits Of Industry Consolidation

American Airlines CEO Robert Isom told a federal judge on Monday that the airline is struggling with Delta Air Lines and other markets such as New York and Boston where major consolidation over the past two decades has decimated the industry.

Essam, who testified in a Justice Department antitrust suit against the partnership between American Airlines and JetBlue Airways, used that argument to defend against federal charges of conspiring to raise prices and reduce competition in the Northeast.

This is the chicken-and-egg argument that airlines have used for more than two decades to justify mergers.

"Delta has done a very good job of managing its network airlines, and I think they completed the merger more than Northwest probably five years ago, six years ago," Isom said. "Delta and Northwest have built the world's largest airlines, and through their networks and partnerships, they can offer customers more flights and destinations from economy to premium."

The Biden administration has opposed airline consolidation and used the American Airlines-JetBlue Northeast alliance for its first legal challenge of what the White House calls anti-consumer behavior. The case could have major implications for future mergers, including the upcoming marriage between Spirit Airlines and JetBlue.

Justice Department lawyers oppose the merger between the nation's first and sixth largest carriers, saying those same carriers need similar partnerships to compete with previous mergers.

Delta merged with Northwest Airlines in 2008. United in 2010 It merged with Continental Airlines in 2010 and Dallas-based Southwest acquired AirTran in 2011. American Airlines merged with US Airways in 2013.

Now the question is, "How much reinforcement is too big?" According to the Department of Transportation, the four largest airlines carry two-thirds of all U.S. passengers.

This case is particularly complex because it involves related routes and schedules at highly competitive airports such as New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and Boston's LaGuardia and Logan International Airports. On Friday, United Airlines announced it would end service to JFK while it negotiates with the Federal Aviation Administration for additional seats.

American is ranked third at JFK behind Delta and JetBlue.

"American has a portfolio of destinations, mostly roundtrips, totaling 105 at JFK and 163 at LaGuardia," said Isom, who was American's president when the alliance was formed.

American had 50% fewer seats at LaGuardia, New York's airport that handles mainly domestic flights, he said.

"This puts us in a big bind and there's little you can do but use your resources to the best of your ability," Isom said.

US District Judge Leo Sorokin, who held a non-jury hearing in Boston on Monday, heard evidence from Isom and Scott Lawrence, a senior network planning executive at American Airlines who recently worked for JetBlue and Delta.

State attorneys pointed to Isom's Monday, March 29, 2020 email to American Airlines Network CEO Vasu Raja, saying industry capacity could shrink in the next 18 months.

Isom said the letter focused on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced airlines to cancel thousands of flights across the industry. American announced its alliance with JetBlue three months later, while the industry was still in turmoil.

"We're in the midst of the worst crisis I've ever seen in the aviation industry that threatens America's survival, and we're losing tens of millions, if not hundreds of millions, every day," Isom said. "We have $7 to $8 billion in cash on any given day, and the forecast is that we could run out of cash and go bankrupt in no time," he said.
