A Virginia Tech think tank is about to open a science lab to address the lack of space that's forcing some entrepreneurs to invent at home and stifling growth.

The consulting firm sees the life sciences and related industries market as an untapped business opportunity in the Roanoke-Blacksburg area that requires the construction of large and low-cost laboratory facilities. The company published its final report in 2021 and answered yes to the industry's feasibility assessment.

According to Maryland-based consultancy Logix, the planned lease of another lab in Blacksburg and Roanoke will provide "significant cost savings" to companies that lease space.

After officials realized that much of the state's private lab space was being leased or otherwise negotiated, a coalition of organizations seeking to spur economic growth began construction on two new labs.

While the academy has a lab where basic research is conducted, "you can't run your startup in a university lab," said Brett Malone, president and CEO of the university's research center.

The state's GO Virginia Economic Development Initiative paid more than half of the Blacksburg Institute's $1.1 million cost, with the rest coming from the Virginia Tech Foundation, a private nonprofit research center. Although not a government organization, the research park has been responsible for 40 years of building independent businesses in technology, biotechnology, software, cyber, aerospace and defense.

A Chicago-based life sciences venture capital firm is entering the Boston market, signing a lease to renovate the former headquarters of the Boston Globe.

Portal Innovations plans to occupy 58,000 square feet of lab and office space in Beacon Capital Partners' Southline development in Dorchester, it was announced Wednesday. The company plans to expand to 22,000 square feet as the remaining space is under development and will be fully occupied in the first half of 2024.

"We are excited to bring our unique business model to a new part of Boston's life sciences ecosystem," Portal Innovations CEO John Flavin said in a press release. “Gateway is committed to supporting entrepreneurs and founders by providing a capital model designed for seed capital investment, access to strategic lab space and management expertise to venture these ventures.

AMHURST, Mass. Biologist Lynn Adler of the University of Massachusetts Amherst received the Mahoney Life Science Award for showing that different types of wildflowers can significantly affect bee health and reproductive performance.

"My lab studies the role of flowers in pollinator health and disease transmission," says Adler. "Flowers are definitely a source of pollen, but in some cases nectar or pollen can be medicinal. On the night the patient died while waiting for treatment at the Medical Sciences Center, emergency officials were caring for a large number of critically ill patients.

HSC Director of Operations Dr. Sean Young told reporters Thursday afternoon that the details of the patient's stay in the emergency room are still under investigation for critical incidents.

"We need to identify areas where we can do things differently and learn from it so it doesn't happen again," Young said Thursday.

"While we await the details of the investigation, I can confirm that part of our approach going forward will include the use of our established outperformance protocols."

Shortly after 11:30 p.m. Monday, the patient arrived by ambulance at the emergency room, where he was examined and treated, Young said. An hour later, staff were informed that the patient's condition had deteriorated and, despite medical intervention, he was pronounced dead shortly after.

Staff were treating twice as many critically ill patients that night, Young said. The average wait time was more than two hours, which is "historically high", he said.

The Manitoba Nurses Union tweeted Thursday that several nurses were working overtime and about 40 patients had been in the waiting room for more than 12 hours. More than a dozen hospital patients waited more than 20 hours, about 80 hours, the union said. About 70 patients were tested within 24 hours but are missing.

On Wednesday, MNU President Darlene Jackson offered condolences to the patient's family and expressed concern for the nurses who worked that night.

"They were worried about it," Jackson said. “And expressed concerns to their employer, to their supervisors, to their managers, to anyone who would listen to their concerns about the event. I felt so sorry for the nurses because it was devastating for them."

On Thursday, Young was joined by Jennifer Kempst, executive director of HSC Emergency Medical Services, and both expressed their condolences to the patient's family. Due to privacy laws, little was reported about the patient.

"We recognize that incidents like this undermine public confidence in the health care system," Young said.

Kamsti expressed his gratitude to the medical staff and shared that there is a desire to improve healthcare. He also said there are other options for low-need patients, such as outpatient clinics, urgent care centers or family doctors, because they may have to wait longer in the emergency room.
