While the new Galaxy Z Fold 8 grabs attention with its all-new passport-sized design, Samsung isn’t abandoning the traditional Fold that power users have gotten used to for years.
Succeeding last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 7, the new range-topping foldable flagship has evolved into the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
This is the device for power users who want the biggest possible display, the most versatile camera system and the best multitasking experience Samsung has to offer in a foldable form factor.
Rather than reinventing the Fold, Samsung has focused on giving the device extra refinements which include a larger battery, a brighter display, tougher construction and several meaningful quality-of-life improvements.
Bigger battery in an even thinner body
One of the biggest and most wanted upgrades to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is one that long-time Fold users have been waiting years for.
Samsung has finally increased the battery capacity to 5,000mAh, making it the first battery capacity upgrade in five years since the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Previous generations, including the Galaxy Z Fold 7, retained a 4,400mAh battery.
Samsung says the larger battery is capable of delivering up to 27 hours of video playback on a single charge.
What’s even more impressive is that Samsung has packed a bigger battery without making the device thicker. Despite having an extra 600mAh, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is actually thinner than its predecessor, measuring just 4.1mm when unfolded compared to 4.2mm on the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Meanwhile, it manages to keep the weight unchanged at 215g.
Powering the device is the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy processor which can be paired with either 12GB or 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage.
The charging capability has gotten a bit of an upgrade with 45W wired charging and 20W wireless charging. According to Samsung, users can charge up to 67% in 30 minutes via USB-C or 35% wirelessly over the same duration.
A brighter display, with virtually no crease

Samsung hasn’t made any drastic changes to the Z Fold 8 Ultra’s screens and form factor. It still features a 6.5-inch cover display and an 8.0-inch foldable display. However, the experience has been refined with a brighter panel, higher pixel density and improved durability.
One of the first things we noticed during our hands-on is how much less noticeable the crease has become. The crease is now barely visible when took a closer look and, more importantly, we could hardly feel it when gliding our fingers across the inner display.
Samsung says the new Titanium-alloy Film reinforces the foldable OLED panel, while the new Flex Titanium Plate provides a flatter and more reinforced support surface beneath the flexible display.

The display itself also gets several upgrades. Peak brightness has increased from 2,600 nits on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 to 3,000 nits, while pixel density has increased from 374ppi to 422ppi. Samsung has also added an anti-reflective coating to improve outdoor visibility.
In addition, they have made opening between the two panels a little bit wider, enabling the Fold to unfold easier without needing to use your fingernail to pry it open. Together with hinge and magnetic tweaks, opening and closing the new Fold 8 Ultra feels smoother than before.
While we really like the new passport-sized Galaxy Z Fold 8 for everyday use and content consumption, the Ultra still has the upper hand for productivity. The larger display gives you more room to run split-screen apps and multiple windows side by side, making it the better Fold if multitasking is your priority.
No major changes for the cameras

Unlike the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8, Samsung is still offering better camera versatility with both ultra-wide and telephoto.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra retains its 200MP main camera, which supports 2x optical quality zoom, alongside a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. It’s 2026 and we wished that Samsung had implemented ALoP (All Lenses on Prism) telephoto camera from the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
The biggest and noticeable hardware upgrade is the 50MP ultra-wide camera, which replaces the previous 12MP sensor. Samsung also says its latest ProVisual Engine also brings improved video performance.

For selfies and video calls, both the cover display and foldable display feature 10MP front-facing cameras that uses a punch-hole implementation instead of an under-display camera.
If photography is a priority, the Z Fold 8 Ultra remains the more compelling option over the new passport-sized Fold 8.
Galaxy AI gets smarter on the big screen

Samsung also continues to expanding Galaxy AI with features designed to take advantage of the Fold’s larger display.
One new addition is Contextual Now Nudge in Multi Window, where Galaxy AI automatically suggests actions based on what’s happening on screen. For example, if someone asks whether you’re free for a meeting next week, the phone can prompt you to open your calendar alongside the conversation in split-screen.
Samsung is also introducing more AI automation through its AI Agent. The agentic feature can prompt live floating actions and perform tasks automatically. Of course, its availability will depend on app support and available local services.
With Samsung now offering two distinct Fold experiences, users now get two distinctive choices. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is designed around portability and content consumption, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra remains the better option for power users who prioritise multitasking and a versatile camera setup.
